Mr Tony Wells will be remembered as a Dudley council transport legend (founder of the transporteers) and all round lovely guy.
Many years as colleagues and friends there are some funny moments we’d like to share;
Tony was notoriously a real “bah humbug” kind of guy, so much so that the team bought him a “bah humbag” santa hat that used to make an appearance during the festive season. Annually as a team we would do secret santa and one year Jo got Tony to buy for, (not the easiest recipient), and after doing a bit of digging, asking him his plans for Christmas, he reluctantly responded saying “nothing much I will mainly be on my own sitting in my pyjamas watching old war movies and reading books” (something which made him very happy). So there was nothing else for it……his secret santa gift had to be a pair of khaki camo pyjamas, so he could truly embrace the ambience and feel part of the troupes - I think he was pretty pleased with them to be honest!?
One of our Christmas do’s was on a snowy December night at the Comedy Club in Brum. It was a great night, we watched some fantastic comedians including an up and coming Sarah Millican and our evening package that included copious amounts of wine. As a result of way too much vino the evening ended up being a pretty messy one with Dave getting kicked out for speaking Russian to the bouncers, Tony taking to the dance floor to demonstrate his pretty impressive break dancing skills and doing the caterpillar across the dance floor and Jo ended up in in A & E because she slipped on ice walking up her street and cracked her head open!!!
Mart, who was employed at Dudley MBC by Tony in Jan 2009 wanted to add that he will never forgive Tony for employing him!!
Dave used to be responsible for issuing all the contractor I.D. badges but his reputation for errors/typos was renowned. One that stuck in all our minds was a mock up I.D. badge he produced and he used Tony’s details and caused us much amusement and we still talk and laugh about it to this day. It read “Tony Well, Ling House” but it should’ve read “Tony Wells, Kings House” – perhaps you had to be there…..
As a team, we thrived on banter and probably a few too many laughs, many of which Tony was instrumental in.
Tony’s passing comes way too soon but he will be fondly remembered as a kind, generous man, who was hugely popular with colleagues and contractors alike.
Tony, you were a solider to the end and fought what seemed like a relentless battle with enormous strength and bravery for almost a decade and we all hope you are now resting in peace.
