Samuel D. Haas deactivated

Samuel was a forward observer with the field artillery in the Seventh Army Division of the First Army. His unit was engaged in a particularly hazardous undertaking. Second Lieutenant Haas, by his heroic actions on that occasion, contributed materially to the success of their mission and in so doing lost his life as his jeep went over a landmine killing him. At the time of his death, he had been in combat for two months. Prior to entering the service, Lt Haas had completed his junior year in Petroleum engineering and geology at the University of Oklahoma.

On May 21, 1943 Samuel was called to active duty and was assigned to O.C.S. in Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla. Graduating from Class 117 with a commission of 2nd Lt F.A. on July 22, 1944. Reassigned to Officers Survey School Fort Sill from which he received a certificate of proficiency in forward observation and reconnaissance August 26, 1944. Lt Haas was assigned to an infantry division at Camp van Dorn, Miss.

Prior to entering the service Lt Haas had completed his junior year in Petroleum engineering and geology at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla. At O.U. he was a member of the National Honor Military Society, the Scabbard and Blade, and the Sigma Chi Social Fraternity. Lt Haas was a graduate of Bolton High School in Alexandria and a member of the First Methodist Church and Oliver Lodge No. 84 F. & A.M.

In the early part of December, 1944 Lt. Haas was transferred to artillery replacement overseas. He left the states the end of December 1944, going the European theater. At the time of his death he had been in combat for two months and was acting as Batallion Forward Observer. His last Duty Location enroute from Reichenborn to Oberbiel, Germany on March 27, 1945. Participated in battle of bulge, his jeep went over a landmine killing him.
