My abiding memory of Ruven is of him completely subverting my expectation. Initially awed by a man I assumed was my friend's taciturn, intimidating dad (a genre I'm very familiar with), I was instantly dumbstruck by his humour, hospitality and generosity. Whether it was inviting me to stay for dinner, tolerating my astounding football ignorance while watching Liverpool or just making interested, considered conversation with (as some of us were once upon a time) an awkward teen - Ruven demonstrated, time and again, his kindness and decency. I'm honoured to have known him.
