MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE REV. THOMAS SAYIBU IMORO
It is with profound shock and sadness that I received the sad news of the sudden and untimely passing on of our brother Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro. On my own behalf and that of my family, I wish to convey our deepest condolences to his wife Samanta, his children and to the Board and staff of GILLBT. May the Lord give you peace and comfort during this time of grief and sorrow.
I have fond memories of my ever-smiling Ghanaian brother. I deeply appreciate the leadership he provided to the Bible translation movement both as Board Chair and later as Director of GILLBT. His passion, insight and vision for God’s work will be solely missed. I recall a moment in 2011while addressing the leadership team of Wycliffe Global Alliance in Accra, he advised, “We are only as strong as our weakest link”. That statement became the guiding principle for the Alliance as we reflected on what it means to be a community in the Bible translation movement.
During the Wycliffe Triennial Conference held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2012, I had the privilege to share the hotel room with Thomas for a whole week. I got the opportunity to know him better and to cement our friendship. I got to learn how deeply he loved his family – his wife and each of the three children. Each night we took time to pray for each member of our families, mentioning them by name. Thomas knew where each of his children was in their development stage and walk with the Lord. It was obvious to me that Thomas dearly loved the Lord, his family and his ministry both at GILLBT and at his church.
I have had the joy to interact with Thomas in numerous meetings in both Ghana and Kenya. I came to respect him as a man of integrity, deeply committed to his work and an extremely hospitable and generous person. Thomas deeply valued efficiency. Every time I sent him an email, I knew he would send me a reply within one hour of my sending the email.
Rev. Sayibu was wholly committed to the growth of the ministry of GILLBT and its entrenchment in the national life of the Ghanaian church. He did not spare any effort to invest in positive relationships between GILLBT, the Ghanaian Church as well as the government and peoples of Ghana. Thomas will be remembered as a great Statesman who very ably represented his country and church in the global scene with great dignity. My last encounter with Thomas was during the handing over ceremony in Tamale last year after he stepped down from his role as director. He handed over to the incoming director with the dignity, respect and poise of a great servant leader.
Be assured of our prayers and support to his family and to GILLBT during this time of sorrow and pain over his passing. As you mourn him, may you celebrate fond memories of a rare human being in Thomas who we have all been privileged to meet and to get to know him.
