Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro

February 28, 1956 - June 15, 2020

Rev. Thomas Sayibu Imoro was born to a Muslim family in 1956. With his parents' consent, he moved to live with a Christian Agriculturist working with a church Agricultural Station in Yendi, Mr Thomas Ahima, in 1969. Rev. Sayibu had the opportunity to hear and learn more about Jesus Christ whiles living with his foster father Ahima. In September 1971, he received Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour at a Scripture Union camp in senior high school. Rev. Sayibu was an alumnus of Ghana Senior High School, Tamale Senior High School, the University of Cape Coast and the University Of Guelph Ontario, Canada. He co-founded the Northern Evangelistic Association (N.E.A) and NewEnergy- an NGO serving in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). He was instrumental in the establishment of the Coalition of NGO’s in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) in Ghana and Africa Network of Civil Society Organizations in Water and Sanitation (ANEW). He played a key role in the initiation of the MOLE Conference which is currently the largest annual convening of stakeholders in the WASH sector. Rev. Thomas Sayibu served on the executive board of many organisations, including, GILLBT, Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Baptist Child Development Program (BCDP), Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID), Literacy and Development through Partnership (LDP), National Health Insurance Scheme-Northern Region, CONIWAS. He served as S.U Northern Regional Chairman, National Executive Council Member and Camps Committee Chairperson. Rev. Sayibu was married to a lovely wife; Deaconess Samata Mahama Imoro and three blessed children; Wunpini, Nasara and Vincent Taali-mbo. In the early hours of Tuesday 16th June 2020, the news was broken by a male nurse with tears in his eyes. He shared these words ‘’ Throughout my working years in this unit, I have seen a lot of people struggle to die, but not him. He passed peacefully’’. He truly stood for the advancement of God’s Kingdom and we take solace in Psalm 116:15 ‘’ Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.’’. He was a true saint of God.

It was with great shock I received the news of the demised of Rev. Thomas Sayibu. Of a truth, Rev. Thomas will be missed by the Wycliffe Alliance Organisations especially those of us around the West African region, he contributed a lot in bringing us together as a family to the extend that we had concluded plans to rotate our fellowship from Country to country, he will for long remain in our memories. I recall our meeting in Nairobi, Kenya too during the Wycliffe Africa Area Leadership meeting, he will always call me "Yakubu, the Nigerian man"; we had a good time together. The short period I knew Rev. Thomas, he was friendly, simple level headed person, one with focus and vision and with passion for the Bibleless communities around the West African region. I was looking forward to attending another function in Ghana where we shall physically meet again, or invite him to Nigeria during one of our Bible dedications or AGM as he and Dr. Paul did to us. My condolences to the Wife, Children, Staff of GILLBT and Wycliffe Global Alliance. Rev. Thomas, adieu and rest well in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ, till we come (to continue that fellowship you introduced before your departure). Blessings. Yakubu La'ah, Executive Director Nigeria Bible Translation Trust.
