Chris and I were undergraduates together at St John’s. We had no academic subjects in common, so my memories of him are of punting and picnics, striding across Cumbrian fells at the college house party, breakfast the morning after the May Ball, endless cups of coffee and earnest late-night conversations. As undergraduates will, we talked of hopes, fears and ambitions. But our paths diverged and we lost touch. Reading the tributes from his friends and colleagues, it is clear that Chris achieved all his youthful ambitions—and far more. He was loved, will be greatly mourned and has made the world a better place. There are no greater achievements than these. He will rest content. My thoughts are with Katherine and Daniel, his family and friends, colleagues and students, and all whose lives he touched. Thank you, Chris.
