Tribute to Pip at her Funeral 5 May 2020. Pip was born on 9 October 1952 in Croydon. She had six brothers and sisters who welcomed her, Scilla, Julie, Toby, Rod, Alison, and Sheila. Her Mother Lynda had three children, and her Father Norman also had three children. Pip arrived and linked the family together. She grew up in Croydon, went to Croham Hurst School, and had lasting happy memories of family, friends, Church, Crusaders, dogs, and holidays at Kootenay and Trevone. Pip always talked about services held on Trevone beach when she was a girl, with her Mother playing a harmonium pedal organ.
Pip wanted to be a Nurse. She trained at Westminster Hospital London in the 1970’s, and those years and the friends she made meant a great deal to her. She and Nurse friends moved into a basement flat in Stockwell, I was studying Electrical Engineering and moved with friends into a flat upstairs. When we met it was love at first sight and Pip and I were Married on 14th May 1977 in Sanderstead Church by the pond - the same Church where her parents Lynda and Norman were Married, and by the same minister. We had our honeymoon in Sweden for about a year while I was working there, and then returned to set up home in Salfords near Redhill. Pip started working at Redhill Hospital, made good friends and always kept in touch. Soon Henry arrived, then Caroline, and we moved to Old Coulsdon. Then Charlotte arrived. Pip loved those days even though there were times she (and I) would go and sit on the dustbin. She walked the dogs, shared baby sitting, helped with Sunday School and the Church, and all those things that Mums do bringing up their children. Henry, Caroline and Charlotte all went to Coulsdon CofE School which was close to our house in Tollers Lane, and then when Caroline and Henry went to Secondary Schools in Croydon Pip would drive them there and back most days.
Then we moved to Caterham where we lived for the past 20 years, Charlotte went to Secondary School in Redhill, we continued worshiping at St Johns and kept in touch with Old Coulsdon friends. Pip worked at Audley School as a Teaching Assistant and was able to put her Nursing background to good use, and she made lasting friendships at Audley over the years. Pip and I had looked forward to the arrival of Grandchildren, our retirement, pensions, gardening, and spending more time together - and a new life of holidays, outings, choirs, visits and Grandchildren soon began. Pip was so proud of her family, and delighted in our Grandchildren – particularly when they could come to our house for the day and sleep over. She had so much energy and love for Henry, Laura, Evie – Caroline, Charlie, Layla, Taryn – Charlotte, Adam, and Penelope and was looking forward to meeting their new arrival in November.
Mum and I had been married for almost exactly 43 years. In all the time I have known her, she has had a strong Christian faith, she loved animals, was caring, calm, cheerful, enthusiastic and happy. Pip enjoyed meeting up with her many friends, was always losing her glasses, phone or her Oyster Card, and enjoyed driving her sports car. She loved our House, adored the Garden, had so many plans for it, and was planting right up to the last minute! It was my Birthday 22 March and Pip had written in my card “You’ll remember this self isolation one. We’ll celebrate properly after all this”! She was a very special person.
