Peter Lau

October 22, 1969 - September 15, 2022

An employee of Instinet for over 25 years, Peter most recently served as CTO for the last 12. Peter was much more than a colleague and friend. Peter was perhaps the nicest person anyone who had the fortune of knowing him will ever meet. A man who had time for everyone, Peter would willingly give up his time - or the shirt off his back - for friends and strangers alike. Peter made this world a much better place and he will forever be missed for his warmth, generosity, compassion, and sense of humor.

This hits hard. I've known Peter for over 15 years; he hired me as a fairly recently graduated youth from London via a remote call (definitely before zoom was a thing) to come work for him in HK, giving me a life changing opportunity. Since then as manager, then colleague and always a friend he was nothing but supportive. I have no doubt everyone writing a message here will say the same thing - he went above and beyond to help other people; always positive, friendly and generous. He was one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever had the fortune to know - and this is said without any exaggeration. The world is a worse place without him. There is so much I will miss about Peter; our (seemingly) weekly rants about work and life in general; our after work drinks discussing anything from our shared passion in music, to physics to technology; our chats we'd have long after I left Instinet and HK about nothing much at all. May he rest in peace, and I hope it brings his family some comfort that he was such a bright light, and had such a positive effect on so many people that he will be remembered for a long time to come.
