Paul Hendey

January 8, 1958 - September 11, 2020

Paul was born in Royston on 8th January 1958 and remained in the area until his early 30s. He spent the next 30 years in Monmouthshire, South Wales before returning to his birth town in 2019. Having qualified as a mental health nurse in 1981 he gained experience in working for both the NHS and independent sector. In 1987 he joined Partnerships in Care and spent several years working at Kneesworth House, Royston. After some time in Lampeter during his university years, the urge to return to the welsh hills was met in 1992 when he was given the opportunity to help set up the newly bought Llanarth Court near Abergavenny as Senior Nurse. During his time there he worked his way up to Director of Nursing, then Director of Clinical Services, and then Regional Director of Clinical Governance. He was involved in the opening of Abbey House in Malvern, which in turn led him to become Hospital Director for the service. In 2013 he joined the corporate compliance team which enabled him to put all his years of experience and his font of knowledge to great use, particularly when the new company, Elysium Healthcare was formed. Paul was an intelligent, kind and generous character who would always willingly help others; a true gentleman. His stories were brilliant and his comments were comical. His love of reading was evident; he most certainly knew his history! He enjoyed gardening and on occasions cooking his own produce. Paul lived for work and for his dogs - you would rarely see him without his beloved pet and loyal companion Lola, and before her the adorable Sally. Paul sadly passed away in September 2020 at the age of 62. He is survived by his Mother, Pam, his Step-Father, Jack and his spaniel, Lola. He will be sorely missed by all those that knew him. Time may pass and fade away but these memories of him will always stay. May he rest in peace.

I started at Llanarth in January 1995 and worked with Paul for the following 22 years. Many of those early years were as Paul's PA, which also meant that most of the time we also shared a desk, 'my desk'! This made working with him, sometimes 'infuriating', as he was unbelievably untidy - much to his amusement, I used to put a ruler on the desk, marking out 'his half' and daring him to put any of his paperwork over the line; I nagged him, trying to make him stick to some system or other I had created to try and organise him - he never listened, just got everything done in his own way - but such was his sense of humour, with his constant hilarious comments, including the nicknames he had for many of us (only Paul could get away with these) we would spend a lot of the time laughing. Although our roles changed over the following years; after a particularly difficult day, or at the end of a long week, I would often find myself in Paul's office for a chat, with a cup of coffee and the never-ending supply of cake. No matter how busy he was, he always had time, was always supportive, and always kind and that never changed.

I started working in the UK at KHH in August 1989 over 31 years ago, on my arrival one of the nicest persons I met was Paul. He came across as a warm friendly person, an intelligent, truly professional, hard worker and accompanied with all those attributes he also had a wicked, dry sense of humour. We enjoyed laughing at all the innocent quips and observations that Paul made, often about the staff walking around the site, but unfortunately too controversial to share on this forum. But it was Paul’s humour that got us though those early days which were quite stressful. I also remember in the early summer, we spent a lot of time on the Tennis court at KHH. Back then, we probably used the court more than the patients did . However one of the most memorable and enjoyable occasions was the time Paul invited John and I, as his ‘Guinea Pigs’, to his house for a Russian Christmas dinner on Halloween night. There was cabbage soup followed by goose stuffed with black pudding and apple however the only one to get a fright that night was the goose as he thought he had 2 more months to live! Paul loved trying out new recipes and particularly old fashioned ones, he also loved the opera and it was Paul that first introduced me to this genre of music by giving me a Puccini record and ever since I have loved this music. Unfortunately our work commitments took us all in opposite directions and Paul ended up ‘chewing leeks and faggots’ at the other side of the country, but John and I would occasionally see him on our sites when he did reviews so we could briefly catch up and ironically just a couple of months ago our son John came home from the Chimneys and said he had met Paul who regaled him with stories about our exploits at KHH and we were delighted he got the chance to meet Paul. We will truly miss Paul and even though we haven’t recently seen him, he is one of the nicest people you would want to meet, a true gentleman and professional and he will remain in our hearts for a long time. RIP Paul. Rosario & John

I know it can sometimes seem contrite when describing an individual as a genuine lovely man and gentleman . But with Paul this is exactly what you got no matter what , nothing was ever to much trouble and his approach to work was always how can I help , rather than finding fault. From the start of our careers at KHH, for me in 1988, Paul was the charge nurse on my ward , I'm sure I drove him nuts , as we really were chalk and cheese , but no matter what I got wrong his style and support never changed. Although his sense of humour was extremely sharp!! Our Careers took different paths with Paul moving to Wales and I returned to the North West , our meetings became less frequent , but Paul never changed, he remained a constant support to everyone he came in contact with and I know always left a positive impression. ( well apart from some of his jumpers ) It is indeed a sad passing and my thoughts are with his family and friends , but I hope they can take comfort in remembering him as he was , a supportive , genuine , kind and considerate man. RIP
