Olu, as he was fondly addressed by friends and close family members, was a flag bearer for praiseworthy attributes such as; humility, hard work, integrity, devoted family man, decency, good Christian among many others.
I am not saying this because he is gone from this mortal world or was my family relations; indeed, I am proud to say this because he breathed, talked, walked, and exhibited these notable & noble attributes every day of his God given time on this Earth.
From the moment you meet Olu, you are drawn to him with his soothing smile and calming voice that seems ordained to bring orderliness and clarity into the daily chaos and commotion that we wade through. His first statement whenever you talk to him is always “alafia fun e”; which means “peace unto you.” He would quickly follow that up with asking about members of your family and praying for them. He was a man of peace in every true meaning of it. For these attributes and many other good qualities, I called him "An Angel Among Us." during the birthday celebration that his family gave him in 2012.
At this point I’ll like to share with you my memory of why this giant of a man; Oludaisi John Abidakun, deserves to be affectionately remembered for these aforementioned accolades.
Humility:
Olu always approached and addressed people with respect. He used to prefix his exchanges with others using Mr., Mrs., Miss, young man, young lady, "awe" or "ore" which means my friend. He was a very patient and good listener. He has a well-organized memory bank that made him a reliable judge whose opinion/advice is gratefully accepted by parties in dispute.
Hard Work:
The Holy book says; "... by their fruits, you will know them…" Olu was famously known and admired for his honesty, hard work, and etiquette. Both at home and work, he would always give his best. I never saw him take any time off to relax. At home, he was always seen helping his family with cooking, laundry, ironing, and cleaning.
Integrity:
Olu's word is as good as gold. Anyone that has any dealings with him will tell you that he is a very dependable and trustworthy guy. He is as reliable as the proverbial North Star.
Decency:
I never witnessed Oludaisi bad-mouthing or belittling others. Where he was unable to offer defense, you will find him suggesting that past or current experiences might have been responsible. In other words he would want accusers to tender judgment with mercy. He was a very decent human being.
Peace:
Olu is an embodiment of "love" in its true sense and meaning. When parties bring disputes and or thorny issues before him, he would patiently listen to their narratives. He will then draw attention to some positive words, adjectives, phrases, statements, or sign posts that the parties ignored before, during, or after the events. By doing so, Olu would bring calm to the troubled waters. Watching Olu solving disputes is like watching a famous magician or opera conductor at their craft. Disputants, most of the time, walk away with gratitude to him.
Good Christian:
The Lord Jesus said that "...Not everyone that calls on my name will see the kingdom of God..." In words and deeds, Olu was a devoted Christian. No matter how tired he was, no matter the season; rain or sun, snow or sleet, he would pull himself together and go to the Catholic Church (Saint Francis of Assisi) on Nostrand Avenue Brooklyn, New York.
Devoted Family Man:
Olu Abidakun was a devoted family man. A very faithful husband and life partner to his wife Mrs. Victoria Abidakun (married for over 45 years). Through their sweat and blood, they supported their children and some relatives to positions where they are able to take good care of themselves. I can humbly submit that Olu's deeds are laced with love. His words and pieces of advice are full of rays of light that guide one out of darkness. He gives without counting the cost. To us, the family, friends and close workers, Olu was a treasured gift. He has left us with notable and noble standards we should cherish and pass on to generations to come.
In the words of Apostle Paul; Olu has fought the good fight. Olu has run a good race. It is our prayers and belief that the Good Lord has welcomed him Home with the Everlasting Crown of Peace and Joy. May the cherished memory of Oludaisi John Abidakun’s never depart from our minds and the face of the earth. Amen. Rest in perfect peace brother OLU.
