Natasha Chetty

December 3, 1975 - September 8, 2021

Dear Richy and family, Natasha’s colleagues and friends at the Home Office were deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Natasha was a vibrant, compassionate and much-loved colleague. Her warmth and openness endeared her to all who met her – from Syrian children arriving to start a new life in the UK, to Ministers and senior officials, and to those of us who had the privilege of working alongside her. We wanted to share with you our memories of Natasha, and hope this will bring some comfort during this very difficult time. With deepest sympathy, The Whole Home Office team.

Natasha and I were thrown together at the start of the Resettlement crisis and had to manage the whole madness between us. We didn’t really know what we were doing but I remember Natasha suggesting we used post it notes to record all the offers of help coming in. By lunchtime, we were drowning in post it’s and I think Natasha had even received one offer from Richard Branson (!). She was the most amazing colleague, so calm but dedicated and she really cared about her work - but most importantly her colleagues. I feel hugely privileged and happy to have known her bright spirit and we will really miss her but know her light is still bright in memories. Sam x

One of my earliest memories of Natasha is a 2 hour bus ride from Exeter station to Bude, joined by lots of energetic school children returning home. I remember us saying that if the Bude com spon group were approved the refugee children would be doing this journey every day. Having arrived in Bude we went to our ‘boutique’ hotel, which was anything but! Natasha was really miffed because Trip advisor wouldn’t accept her very honest and accurate review, even though she very frequently posted! The pub where we ate in the evening was bizarre, it was full of sayings and ‘jokes’ that must have been written by the winner of the Bude Mr Misogynist competition for the previous 5 years. We asked the woman behind the bar about them and she said they were just a laugh, we didn’t think so, and politely told her as much. Whenever I see a picture of Natasha in my head she is always smiling and that’s how I will remember her, she was thoughtful, kind and considerate, she challenged appropriately and always made me want to do my best to impress her.

I wrote this poem for Natasha to show her what an impact and difference she makes to people's lives. I'm really glad I got to give it to her: *A poem about Natasha* *Sassy and smart is our Natasha * *Setting the trends, a real fashion-ista.* *Talented to the max* *She can bake, she can sew* *There's literally not a thing she doesn't know!* *Always there to lend an ear* *You can count on her for the perfect steer.* *Never afraid to be bold and daring* *The perfect mix of kind and caring!* *She will rise to the challenge-* *Resilient and strong to the core* *A true inspiration and role model* *That's for sure!*

I first met Natasha in early October 2015 when she and I pretty much were the 'Partnership Team' of the newly-expanded Syrian Resettlement programme. I remember right at the outset being struck by how much in control of what seemed like an impossible situation Natasha was. She was working incredibly long hours and late nights, but had brought to bear her instinctive organisational skills and so there was a log of emails and a stakeholder spreadsheet in place despite the utter chaos all around us. The Minister at the time, Richard Harrington, was a fan, and when he wandered into the office for a chat she was one of the people he stopped to speak to. I have many very happy memories of those early weeks and months in the 'Gold room' and Natasha is very much part of them. Her determination to celebrate her 40th birthday by being on a flight with refugees went down in team legend, and she fulfilled that ambition and helped us all to celebrate bringing in the '1000 before Christmas'. My other really striking memory of Natasha is around the Windrush documentary 'Sitting in Limbo' and some of the very difficult conversations we had as teams at that time. She never shied away from saying the difficult thing and was often an informal spokesperson for more reticient members of the team. I relied very much on Natasha to be honest about how things were and this was a great gift that she brought. I feel hugely privileged to have known and worked with Natasha. She was both talented and empathetic: a rare and valuable combination. She is a huge loss.

My last journey before the pandemic closed in was with Natasha. We came back to London together on the train from Sheffield where we had had a meeting in the HO offices there. Until then, I'd not spent lots of time chatting to Natasha socially, and it was such a brilliant couple of hours. Natasha's insights were so broad ranging and knowledgeable, and so warmly and generously shared, the journey went by so quickly. In particular, I remember her excellent podcast recommendations, which sustained me through the lockdown!

My memories of Natasha aren't really work related - despite always getting everything done that she needed to, she always managed to fit in time to talk about the more important things in life. Like Bake Off ('that technical was way too gimmicky'), hot cross buns (Delia's recipe), suddenly having to make hundreds of Mauritian iced biscuits (moral - don't post your baking photos on Facebook). Or whether empanadas are basically just pasties (they are). Whether Ottolenghi's 'Mauritian' recipes are authentic (a resounding 'no'). Is an Instant Pot worth getting? (Yes.) Important, protracted debates (oak worktops vs corian). Practical help (don't bother sewing your own leggings, how not to make your masks too sweaty). And plenty of tips - films, podcasts, who to follow on Instagram (not Felicity Cloake because too many dog photos - one of the few things we disagreed on). I knew I got a lot from her – writing it out has really brought that home. I’ll miss her enormously – she genuinely enriched my life.

What a wonderful day Natasha and I had at the Royal Garden Party. She looked so stunning when we met outside the Ritz! I loved the chance to chat to Natasha on our frequent trips to Sheffield to see our team when we met at 'the piano' at St Pancras. She was so easy to talk to about absolutely anything and a great listener and we developed a wonderful friendship through our job share partnership 'chetty and kennedy'. Natasha was very kind and we shared lots of personal stories. She liked to party and we had a great night of karaoke and another evening dancing at the Moo Cantina to Abba! I will always think of Natasha when I watch RuPaul's drag race, Bake Off, Sewing Bee and All That Glitters. I will miss you my beautiful 'work wife' and friend x

The first time I met Natasha was at an I&V awayday in Birmingham, where we were seated at the same table. Natasha was extremely friendly, warm, and inspiring. While getting to know Natasha at the awayday, we quickly got onto the topic of our favourite TV shows, which Natasha HIGHLY recommend Ru’Paul’s Drag Race. Although I hadn't watched the show before, I was well aware that my sister loved it too, and I decided to watch it with her. The next weekend I requested that we binge watch all the seasons I had missed, and I can now proudly declare I am a fan of the show thanks to Natasha! Natasha's loss on the team will be felt, and I wish her family my condolences
