Article on The Champion: Colleagues and friends today paid tribute to County Councillor Malcolm Barron who sadly died earlier yesterday (Wednesday 13 May) at Aintree University Hospital. County Councillor Barron, who represented West Lancashire North division, had been ill for several months. He was elected onto the county council in 2005, and most recently served as Deputy Chair of the Regulatory Committee, as well as a member of the Development Control Committee. He had also served as a West Lancashire Borough councillor until a couple of years ago. County Councillor Geoff Driver CBE, Leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "Malcolm was very well thought of and respected. His sense of humour will be very much missed. He was the epitome of a gentleman and was kind and considerate to others at all times. "He was a superb councillor, supportive of his colleagues and liked by everyone he met. He represented all that was best in our local government tradition. "He was a true champion for the constituency that he represented. He knew the residents in his area, and they knew him. He was dedicated to the people of West Lancashire whom he served for so long." County Councillor Azhar Ali, Leader of the Labour Group added: "I deeply regret Councillor Barron's passing. He was a fine man and a great Lancastrian. He was immensely conscientious." Councillor Barron ran his own agricultural business for many years.

Article on Lancashire Live: "Tributes have been paid to a popular county councillor described as “exactly the person you’d want looking after your community”. Tarleton stalwart Malcolm Barron had lived in the village his entire life and dedicated much of that time to fighting for the community. He died at Aintree Hospital on May 13 having been ill for several months. After his death, colleagues were quick to talk of their admiration for Malcolm, who had friends throughout the village and across the political divide at both borough council and county council level. He was a serving councillor on Lancashire County Council up to his death and had also been a representative of West Lancashire Borough Council between 2014-2018. Cllr Sam Currie served alongside Malcolm on the borough council and was hugely saddened by the loss. He said: “He was such a lovable guy, everybody in Tarleton knew him and he knew everybody in Tarleton.” Unusually popular in local politics, Malcolm was well regarded across the council and was known to bring bags full of his freshly grown apples to distribute at meetings. He was also very prone to cracking jokes during the meetings. Cllr Currie said: “I used to have to avoid sitting next to him at meetings because he’d start saying things like ‘I’ve got the best beard in here, no-one’s got a better beard than me’ “It was surreal but that was Malcolm.” Despite his often light-hearted attitude, he fought strongly for the village and to protect the interests of those living there. Cllr Currie said: “He is exactly the person you’d want looking after your community. “He was also just a really decent bloke and I’ve not heard anyone saying anything remotely bad about him” Cllr Currie fondly tells the story of a time when an opposing candidate distributed leaflets claiming Malcolm had fallen asleep three times in county council meetings at County Hall. When he asked Malcolm if he was OK, he angrily responded: “I’m furious. It was only two times!” Cllr Currie added: “In any case, people in Tarleton weren’t annoyed about what it said, they were only annoyed that someone was trying to attack Malcolm” Malcolm lived in the village his whole life and was involved in local politics for more than 30 years. He attended Tarleton C of E Primary School, Hutton Grammar School and The Hutton Institute of Agriculture before moving into the family farming business. He spent more than 25 years in the Agricultural Supply Industry selling farm sprays and fertilizers and was also a director of a Dutch glasshouse construction company and director and company secretary of an agricultural land business. His family have been in Lancashire for almost 500 years and his ancestor Daniel Barron was the first innkeeper of the Cock & Bottle pub in Tarleton. Malcolm was widowed when his children, Antony and Lisa, were aged just nine and four and he raised them as a single parent. In his own profile on the South Ribble Conservatives website, Malcolm proudly wrote: “They were educated at local state schools and I am proud to say that Lisa is a corporate Litigation Solicitor in London and Antony is an IT Manager and graduate of the University of Kent where he has been awarded PhD. “I particularly mention this because I have strong feelings about the current attitude to single parent fathers both legally and in society in general.” At Lancashire County Council, Malcolm represented West Lancashire North and most recently served as Deputy Chair of the Regulatory Committee, as well as a member of the Development Control Committee. County Councillor Geoff Driver CBE, Leader of Lancashire County Council, said: “Malcolm was very well thought of and respected. His sense of humour will be very much missed. He was the epitome of a gentleman and was kind and considerate to others at all times. “He was a superb councillor, supportive of his colleagues and liked by everyone he met. Malcolm was great company to be around. At Antony's graduation in Canterbury he had the tables spellbound. Wonderful memories of him of that day.

Letter to Barry Bryan a good neigbour, friend and colleague of Malcom from the South Ribble Conservative Association. Dear Barry, South Ribble Conservatives are all hugely saddened by the death of one of our Association stalwarts, County Councillor Malcolm Barron, who passed away on Wednesday. Malcolm was a former Association Chairman of South Ribble Conservatives, and represented West Lancashire North on Lancashire County Council. Born and bred in Tarleton, Malcolm’s family have been local in the area since the time of the Tudors! Malcolm continued the political line of the Barrons begun by his ancestor William Barron, who signed the Protestation of 1641 which was presented to Charles the First and was one of the causes of the Civil War. Locally, Malcolm’s main priorities were supporting local farms and improving highways infrastructure- he was one of the leading champions of the Green Lane Link road proposals to remove heavy wagons from the village centres of Tarleton, Banks and Hesketh Bank. His campaign for the new road will continue! Conservative MPs past and present have paid tribute to Malcolm. Our new MP Katherine Fletcher said “An hour before I heard about Malcom's sad passing I was pointing at his emails with the Department for Transport. To the last he was advocating for his community, and if we gain agreement for the Green Lane Link I don't feel we will have to look hard for a road name. RIP Malcom, I will pick up your torch on this.” Former MP Seema Kennedy, meanwhile, commented “I was so very sad to hear of Malcolm’s passing. Malcolm was a man of real energy and passion, who knew so much about the world, and particularly that corner of West Lancashire which had been his home and that of generations of the Barron family. I used to love canvassing with him, as every other house contained a friend, relative or workmate, and they would reminisce about Tarleton in the old days. But Malcolm was not stuck in the past. He loved the village and campaigned relentlessly for projects to improve it, like the Green Lane Link. I am only sorry that I never managed to deliver that road scheme for him but know that when it does get built, it will be entirely due to Malcolm’s doggedness. I send my deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Malcolm, especially his children and grandchildren.” And Lorraine Fullbrook, who represented South Ribble between 2010 and 2015 in addition to fighting the constituency in 2005 said “I was very sad to hear the news that Malcolm passed away. He was a lovely man, who worked tirelessly for his constituents both on Lancashire County Council and West Lancs Borough Council. He loved his council work and of course loved his politics. Malcolm was a great friend of mine and he was a decent, honourable man, who loved his dogs. He was a true-blue, liberal Conservative with a great sense of humour. I send my deepest sympathy to Lisa, his daughter and Antony, his son. I am very grateful to have known Malcolm.” Personally, I have known Malcolm for many years as a dedicated and hardworking member of South Ribble Conservative Association, of which he was an officer and past Chairman. He worked tirelessly as a County Councillor always supporting his local community. Above all he was a good man. He will be sadly missed. Got a memory of Malcolm you'd like to share? Click here. May Malcolm rest in peace. Best wishes Phil Smith Association Chairman
