A few things which I will always remember of her: - her independence - her love for Guido - she studied to be a druid - when one of their animals disappeared they would go by the SPA to check who needed to be adopted. - definitely not only UPA :-)...
Marielle in the meeting of Gaza Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture platform (GUPAP). Gaza, Palestine, 2014.
MUKTA (means pearl, and also means freedom) Straddling two worlds Am I the pearl or the oyster? Whatever the world makes of me, the waves bring to me an unknown shore And I have to start all over Catching the sand, the grit between my teeth Making another pearl ever more special than the last Wrap me around a problem; a sea of them I just keep churning them Pearls out Incandescent, luminous, shimmering, reflecting Upon the endless tide (Juli Cariappa, organic farmer in Karnataka, South India, Sept 2019)
So sad to hear that Marielle has left us. I had the honour to be at the start of what became her remarkable career. Marielle joined me as a student in Cameroon, where I conducted my PhD research, and with her came Guido all the way along. They resided in a very remote village and Marielle committed herself to collecting many data that I needed for my research. She did so with highest dedication imaginable, sharing sound and sometimes novel ideas around our research topic. When asked by her tutors at university to provide feedback on her performance I could only recommend to grant her the highest marks possible. And so they did and Marielle graduated summa cum laude. I will remember her as a remarkable personality with human assets that are too scarce in the world we live in.
Marielle, you were such a Jewel!; a good-hearted, intelligent and diligent professional. You impacted your world. You were a direct blessing to many of us! I will not forget your last words to me, just two months before your death, when I enquired after your health. You wrote: ...."Blessing you with God’s love...". I didn't know it would be the last correspondence between us. You left me with God's love. I trust that you will find rest in the bosom of God. Your memories live on. Sleep, dearly beloved.

Dear Marielle, dear Guido, Marielle always in a good mood from when I started working with her, as a young professional in the difficult ILEIA times, putting it back on its initial and so strong track in 1998, to the great phone call in 2012, discussing an urban agriculture project in Gaza. I remember still so well how to the point, clear and effective our first talks were, same page business, and then the implementing of that Oxfam Italia project with Rene' in one of the most difficult surroundings and institutional contexts, from value chains and change to participatory work with Gazawi farmers and other stakeholders, and all the other small and bigger thinking of new initiatives. Marielle, you as a strong a rooted olive tree, I was shocked to hera that you had succumbed, knowing how hard you have fought against it. Guido I am with you in the sadness and shock you have to through to now.

Ode to a beautiful person Like the invisible white threads connect the roots of trees and grow at times the most magnificent things. So tirelessly, unselfishly and often unseen was Marielle the bearer of a people’s network full of passion and professionalism. bram huijsman

Marielle, you were such a wonderful friend and extraordinary colleague. Thank you so much for turning our lives and practices more luminous.. and greener. It has been over 20 years since we started contributing to build a better word with many many more of us. I remember how we struggled at the same time against the cancer, and when you survive you feel much more intensely the close friends who could not. Your legacy and inspiration will help me facing a deep sorrow. Yves.
