I was a newly enrolled lawyer at the Madras High Court who had just turned twenty two; so like all newbies I was excited and in awe of all the senior lawyers who walked around in their stiff white collars and swishing black gowns. Among the few who have stayed in my memories are Rangarajan Kumaramangalam and his wife Kitty .The first time I saw Ranga, as he was fondly called by everyone, and his wife Kitty I was struck by the camaraderie that they maintained among themselves and with others. There was joie de vivre that emanated from Ranga, who smiled at everyone who passed by him in the court corridor. His wife, Kitty, complemented him perfectly with her reserved friendliness and her affability. Kitty, with her crisp cotton saree draped elegantly, her short hair and her élan always walked with a jaunty and purposeful step. I watched her often and wondered how long it would be before I could exude that kind of confidence. One day ,I ran into Kitty at a shopping complex and she smiled and stopped to ask me whether or not I was the new girl on the block. When I said indeed I was, she said welcome to this profession and she wished me luck. She told me she was happy that so many young women were entering the profession and succeeding in it. I was deeply touched by her encouraging words and her warmth. Soon thereafter Ranga and Kitty moved to Delhi and I didn't meet them again but they stayed in my memory. I read about their achievements and successes in the newspapers . Today as I pay tribute to Kitty and her indomitable spirit , I just want the family to know that their parents had a positive impact on a lot of people by being so amiable and friendly to all. May they both rest peacefully with each other !

Dear Kitty Aunty, I love you. I am not sure if this world deserved you. You saw me as a child in a way no adults ever did. You gave me your love unconditionally - I think that is the only way you knew to love. I saw you too, playing along in the world of the grown-ups, and I knew you were different. How your smile lights up the room like the sun! How strong, protective and quietly clever you are. When you found out that my headmaster in school had caned me, you became a warrior and said we’ll sue him! That made me happy :). There were so many small things I remember that you did to show me that I existed - thank you for that gift. I want to be more like you - a queen, a lover, a lioness, a child. I hope this world gave you, at least sometimes, some of what you gave us. I will keep you always. Avnish/Ezra
