I was shocked and saddened to hear of Kate's sudden death at such a relatively young age. (I can hear Kate saying, "'relatively young!' What do you mean Bob! 'Young' surely!")
Kate was always so positive and full of life. As one of the script writers and scenery painters, I worked closely with her on the later OFT pantomimes, which she starred in and later produced/ directed together with Diana, my wife. She was driven and practical and always up for a laugh and a joke.
In fact I first met Kate in 1987: I was on the interview panel which gave her her first job at OFT as a direct entrant HEO. Other than our pantos, I never worked with her at OFT or anywhere else but I heard from other friends and colleagues what a good and fair manager she was.
Bravely, she joined us for a few days in New Zealand. I remember she was a potential sunburn nightmare with that fair skin of hers but she did bring a vat of 50 factor sunscreen with her on that holiday! I remember how our friends out there liked her immediately and they too are saddened by her loss.
Carlos Santana once said, "There is no greater reward than working from your heart and making a difference in the world." That's what Kate did. RIP Kate. She will never be forgotten.
