"Travelers who put their homesickness behind them, who explore a place thoroughly, may find upon returning home that they experience a new kind of homesickness, a benign kind, that which comes only to those who travel well: homesickness for a place once visited, even if only briefly -- the sense that only in the western Highlands of Scotland, the beaches of the Lesser Antilles, the markets of Marrakesh, did some deep and very real part of their soul feel completely and exhilaratingly at home." I met Karen in Batie, Cameroon, and one of my first memories with her was hiking in the hills around Batie looking for snakes. Karen was fearless. She knew a lot about almost everything and was so curious to fill in any information that she didn’t happen to already know. We connected on many levels. After Peace Corps, I feel incredibly fortunate that we had so much wonderful time together. She visited me in Austin, I visited her in DC. She visited me in Montenegro, I visited her in Mali. We enjoyed trips to Ohio, Minnesota, Seattle, New York. We shared a house together on Capitol Hill for a time. There is a hole in my heart and the world has lost a very special soul. I miss you and I love you, Karen.

Out on the town with Peace Corps friend, Ellen Kramer, David and me. This night she gave me two beautiful rugs from Kazakhstan and a deep hug.

You kept your cool even when being attacked by wild animals... When I look at this picture, I can't help but think you were feeling complete joy while wrangling a puppy. It was a lovely day in Huntley Meadows where you did your thing of capturing beautiful pictures of nature. You always found the beauty in everything through your photos. I hope you knew the beauty we saw when we looked at you.

A wonderful strong person. She was always so supportive and loyal to her friends. I spent lots of time in lovely Ebolowa, Cameroon talking with Karen about "de tout e de rien" (about everything and nothing). Her passing is a tragedy for us, those that love her, but she is in a better place now. Karen I wish you perfect peace in heart and that wherever you are, you will never be alone as we will always be with you.
