I find it hard to come to terms with the sudden loss of this dear colleague and friend. We weren't at all finished! John was one of those fine colleagues that welcomed me when I came into the EISS collaboration more than twenty years ago and he was always kind and including; from then on and all the way till now we had things we were discussing to figure out the ever-surprising turns of influenza. I still hear his voice and see his smile. He had this fine blend of competence, positivity, curiosity and open-mindedness, collaborative and including approach that has left a long-lasting and unforgettable mark on the European and global influenza surveillance community, as well as on many colleagues professionally and personaly, certainly on me. A substantial loss to us all, but first and foremost my thoughts and condolences go to John's family and nearest ones.
