John passed away peacefully in his sleep. A vivacious, larger than life man, he loved anything to do with cars. He is survived by his loving wife Ann, their children, Robert and Deborah, daughter-in-law Lesley and son-in-law Max, as well as his grandchildren Denis, Archie and Billy. Richard Coles Memories of John: Marinating a whole salmon in the bath at Avenue Road to make gravadlax. Keeping huge bars of catering white chocolate in the garage and using a hammer and chisel to break chunks off in the dead of night Sailing to IOM from Liverpool in John’s boat and when we arrived all we had to eat was a large smoked salmon John had brought along. We bought bags of chips from the chippy, cut the salmon into chunks (we had no knife to slice it) and that was our supper. But of course number one would be the infamous trip to Le Mans 24hr. The sight of John & Don driving in front of us in their red Ferrari Barchetta wearing white leather helmets. Just too much to take in and never to be repeated I’m pleased to say!

Memories of John When we think of John, his love of beautiful and Classic cars is top of the list. He even let Mandy drive one of his cars round to block! His wicked sense of humour was always apparent. Perhaps that's why he let Mandy drive his car, only to find she handled it well! He was an avid Scrabble player, a game which we always played after our regular meals at each others houses. He always beat us with words we had never heard of, nor had the Collins dictionary on occasion, but Mandy got round that by teaming up with him to be on the winning side!! We had many holidays with John & Ann . Mark had a surprise when they joined us on his 40th birthday trip to Portugal. He thought they had come to take us to the airport! John was also a proud family man who talked glowingly about his children and grandchildren. He always told Ann how lucky he was to have secured such a beauty to be his bride and how lovely she always looked. We are privileged to say that John was one of our greatest friends and although he may not be here anymore, he leaves his inprint on our hearts and minds, filled with lovely memories. Pam and I first met John in 1990 when we were competing in the Manx Mountain Challenge Rally, John was in his Alfa and he had Deborah as navigator, who at first we thought it was his wife as did some of the other competitors, it wasn't until we reached Silverstone when we found out. After that first meeting we became good friends and John and I attended many car and race meetings together in England, plus we went on a Maserati Rally in Belgium when John was the Navigator, (I remember he was a good Navigator). John and Anne came on several Manx Classic Car Club tours over the years. I remember we used to have many dinner parties, both at our place and John and Anne's place, when very often John would do the cooking. We also used to go out to various restaurants together to meals and John always had room for a desert or two! When John and Anne lived at Hillberry on the TT course he always invited us and some Maserati friends to watch the races from there, and at the lunch time interval he would have the Barbecue going with loads of food, we never could eat it all, but, John said it would not go to waist. When we Finally moved to the Isle of Man I kept one of my lorries from Norspeed and loaded our final belongings ourselves to our home on the Island, John was quick to say he would pay for the ferry over in return that we then moved John and Anne from Hillberry to Turnberry Avenue. I was lucky to have known John since childhood, many fond memories of this charismatic man with a beautiful demeanour and smile. Loved to be surrounded by friends and family, John and Ann were the greatest of hosts who made all feel special, loved and welcome. I remember seeing many beautiful cars come and go, the one that stays with me most was the beautiful Jaguar race rep. I was lucky enough to have John take me on an early morning blast around the TT course in his Alfa, this was just awesome worth getting up so early for - thank you John, and what a driver! You touched dearly the lives of mine, my sister Sue's and Jenny our passed Mums, we are more the better for having known and loved you. Our thoughts are with you Ann, Robert, Deborah and family. RIP JB - You will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered. X

John was a great guy, who loved his food and cars. Memories of him that stand out are - The days before Easter, when he found the children’s Easter eggs, (the ones that Ann had hidden), ate all of them and left the empty wrappers and boxes! Whilst staying with him in the IOM we ordered and collected a Chinese takeaway for eight people, (there were four of us). He assured me we needed that much as we could have the rest the next day. He beat us all to it by getting up at 2 a.m and finishing it all off! Cooking late night kippers, squeezed into a confined galley on a Norfolk Broads boating holiday and serving us his offering with the top half of his T shirt and his face and hair well splattered with kipper oil! He was the man who had a new front lawn laid with turf at his first home and then went on holiday for two weeks. The hot sun and lack of water did their job and the effect was unique, just as if someone had laid two hundred pieces of toast, evenly spaced with a foot gap between each slice! Aged about eighteen he had a little Fiat 500. One wet evening on the way to the Crown at Tur Langton for a couple of ciders, he surprised a couple, who stepped out unexpectedly on a zebra crossing by emergency braking and pirouetting his way towards them ending up going backwards across the crossing. Scattering his Dad’s ashes at sea but not checking the wind direction and consequently covering himself and the deck of the boat with the deceased ashes! John Briggs, top bloke, I hope that they have warned heaven that you are on your way!! Fond memories John and Beverly
