I needed some time before I process this shocking news. Not sure I have. But, like many of my ex colleagues, I have some fond memories of Jean Drouffe
I am reminiscing memories from our countless meetings of working closely with you over 5-yrs. You were a fighter and someone who always challenged us to be a better version of ourselves.
Even over the last few days, I wished I can have one of the many intellectually stimulating conversations that I have had with you on insurance and Arsenal from time-to-time. I learnt so much about AML, reserving, investments, expense managament, board management and so on from you.
I wanted to share 3 stories/influences with Jean that I will always carry with me:
1. He once told me - Most often than not, our hard work as CEOs reaps benefits for our successors. Thats the nature of the job. It always put my job in perspective that we reap what someone did before us (for good or bad) and we pass on the effects of what we do today to our successor (for good or bad)
2. When I made a rookie judgment mistake (6-months into being 1st time CEO) on a partnership and I had a tough time at the Board, Emmanuel and he backed me. Else, I would have been fired back then and I learnt a lot from that mistake
3. He always threw unreasonable challenges or at least thats what I felt and then later discovered, when we push a good team, they will find a way.
Thanks for being you Jean....
May your soul rest in peace!!! Praying for your wife and kids.
