The pictures are of Janos with Mark Jessell in Aachen, 2015, where the three of us were in a conversation mixing science and comedy. I can’t remember when I first met Janos but it must have been in the 1980s. We often discussed our shared interests – roaming over pressure solution, soluble salt experiments, Oman and Naxos for example – and got a long way towards starting some joint research though regrettably this never happened. I always appreciated his thoughtful conversations and diverse ideas and enjoyed his company. Although he officially retired, this seemed far from the truth in practice. I know he was setting up a company, and one our last conversations concerned opportunities for new ways of teaching online he was enthusiastic about. I last spoke with Janos (online) in November 2021; first he emailed to say he was busy and couldn’t speak until the New Year but then a few minutes later he instead said “now?”. Considerate, in that last conversation as in others through the years. I’m sorry to see him go.
