At the Institut fuer Gebirgsmechanik (IfG) in Leipzig, we were shocked to hear about the tragic death of Prof. Janos Urai. Based on the contacts of Till Popp, we had a lively professional exchange with Janos since 2010, which culminated in several visits of him to the IfG. We have learned to appreciate his passionate nature and, above all, universal expertise, which has led to very intense and mutually fruitful discussions on the hydro-mechanical properties of salt rocks. In recent years, this collaboration has intensified in connection with a project on the assessment of Dutch caverns, which Janos accompanied as scientific advisor, and a joint report on creep at low stress. We will miss him very much as a person, but also as a scientific institution. Our condolences to his family. Ralf-Michael Günther, Till Popp, Dirk Naumann, Christopher Rölke, Christoph Lüdeling for the IfG
