I met Janos when I was a post-doc in Aachen in Cultural Geography in 2009. This photo was taken at the GEOTAG 2011, we had so much fun in our truly interdisciplinary philosophical reflections, e.g. comparing society and a pile of sand (when will critical tipping points or junctures been reached etc.). We met more often in Oman than in Aachen though, which was tough as you never stayed too long in Muscat, most of the time in a hurry to go to your beloved mountains. Outdoor acitivites were so much fun with you. "Lets go for a mountain walk early morning", you said. And I met you at the foot of a mountain range in Oman, and thought we would gently walk up the hill, as you started running off... until I realised this was meant to be a morning workout. I will not forget our cycling trips between Aachen and Maastricht.
I learned a lot from your wisdom, about life and nature, reflected in your artistic photographies. I was mesmerised by the fact how you found an artist, Dagmar, who painted your faults of rocks in beautiful art work. You were so passionated about science and your family.
The first photo of my husband and I has been taken by you in Muscat, you gave us our "approval" as kind of a best men and wise friend. You were always caring. Thank you for all, Janos. Your last email a week before your accident said "I am sorry we did not meet when I was in Mainz last time"... so am I. Still so much to talk about with you. Have a safe journey.
