My deepest sympathies to all family and friends who knew and loved Janos! I first met Janos Urai when he visited Texas many years ago and I was immediately impressed by his ability to synthesize observational results and theory, and provide understanding in the Earth sciences. I was fortunate to meet him many times since then at national and international meetings. Janso was an outstanding and innovative scientist with incredible insights.
In years since, I enjoyed his photography on his unique holiday cards. From these cards and conversations with Janos, I also came to know him aa a remarkable naturalist, and yes, a climber. I hope that he is watching us from the mountainous heights that he so loved. With great shared grief, Andreas Kronenberg
