From Mittha Pothmitiyage I first met Aunty Inez when we barged into their home in Rathmalana after a rugby match in Colombo. Despite the unannounced descent, she welcomed us with open arms and a big heart. That was my first experience of her warmth and hospitality. Over the decades, that warmth only got warmer and the heart only got bigger. She entertained Lalin’s and Rohan’s friends at every opportunity she had. I got to know her better during my time in the U.S. when I was roommates with Lalin and Rohan. Uncle Robert and Aunty Inez visited us often and we boys always looked forward to their presence. Aunty Inez made sure we were well fed and even cleaned our rooms. She never fussed about the various idiosyncrasies that we roommates had and ignored our antics with a quiet grin. She made the most delicious food for us while I enjoyed a scotch with Uncle Robert and her efforts made each of us very special. She invited me and some others who were Lalin’s and Rohan’s friends regularly when they were in Colombo and they became the center of gravity in our social lives where we met and developed many friendships. She was a tremendous affable host that did so with love and affection. Both of them were confidantes to some of us during challenging times and we could always count on their support. I consider myself very blessed to have had the opportunity to know Aunty Inez and Uncle Robert. It is a chapter in my life that will be cherished forever. Aunty Inez you will be missed but will always be in our hearts.
