Ian was a lovely man and a perfect father-in-law. Easy to talk to, with good humour, and a no-nonsense attitude that made me quickly warm to him. He treated life’s ups and downs with a wry smile or a raised eyebrow, and his first concern was always for others, even when he had more than enough adversity of his own to deal with.
His contrasting passions were peacefully gardening and shouting at the football. When it came to the latter, I was truly glad to have been there when his beloved Latics lifted the FA Cup against all the odds. That unlikely triumph of the unassuming little underdog was no more than he deserved after his unfaltering lifelong support.
As with football and gardening, so he was with family; giving unfaltering love and unerring support.
He will be truly missed.
