When we met at an impromptu seminar organized by the NWFL for media officers in Lagos in March this year, I never knew that that was going to be the last time we will be seeing. Wow! I am still in a state of disbelief that my dear Henrietta is no more. Who will teach me the yoruba language that you vowed to make sure I leaned by fire by force after 30 years of trying without success? You vowed in March to speak only yoruba to me wherever and whenever we met! God knows best. Who can question Him!
I recall how Henrietta called me repeatedly at midnight in 2004 just to ensure that I boarded a Sosoliso plane that was to take the Supporters Club to Tunisia for the Nations Cup. She didn’t want me to spend the N300k that Coca Cola gave me for the trip on a private arrangement that would've gulped all the money.
“My brother, Dr Ladipo has a big plane going to Tunisia tomorrow, and we are all following him. Call him now because I’ve given your name to him”.
I did as she advised and paid a token for a return trip. How can I also forget how this Amazon told me where I could get Nigerian food in Monastir?
I sought her advice when we got back to Nigeria on the brand of car to buy and she said ”My brother, tell your wife say I talk say you don try for this business and that na Mercedes benz fit you”. I narrated this to my wife and i went to Benin Republic to get one. Of course, Henrietta was the first person to ride in my Mercedes Benz with me.
Henrietta, your strict instructions on how to manage women athletes when I wanted to start a Women's Basketball Club in 2018 still rings a bell in my ears. They are words that have helped me in the success recorded by MFM Women Basketball Club. And you were about the first set of friends to congratulate me when the team came second in the league in December and qualified to represent Nigeria in Cairo, Egypt. Your genuine advice couldn't have been bought with money. I will forever be grateful, my dear sister.
I have so much to say about this wonderful lady who gave her all to sports and the girl child in her life time.
Henrietta, I will miss your sweet smile and support for all that I do, but I am consoled by the fact that your creator loves you more. Adieu, Henrietta.
