Geoff had already been a member for more than nine years when I joined the Society. Our association really began in 2002 when he became Honorary Secretary of the Society as I began my third season as Chairman. Geoff was new to the Society Executive but we soon had a cordial working relationship, with Geoff offering administrative efficiency, wry humour and wise counsel in his quiet, gentlemanly fashion. Geoff’s next Chairman was his friend and travelling companion Geoff Cove, with whom Geoff enjoyed a fruitful 5 years.
Geoff was still in post in 2012 when I began my second stint in the Chair and our old relationship resumed, almost as if the intervening 5 years hadn’t happened. And Geoff was still there three years later when I retired to the long grass. The Society has been fortunate over the years to have benefitted from committed and dedicated Honorary Secretaries and Geoff must be recognised as one of the longest serving of that distinguished body of men.
Geoff and I played golf for the Society at Ullesthorpe Court and Staining Lodge in support of SOS Kit Aid. We can’t claim much in the way of success in the golfing context, but we enjoyed each other’s company enormously and collected a few wooden spoons. Further afield we played at Royal Durban Golf Club, kindly arranged by KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union on the Society exchange in April 2012. On the KZN exchange Geoff was not only a fine ambassador for the Society but also an active match official, touch judging in the magnificent setting of Thomas More College, Kloof, on the hills overlooking Durban.
Geoff was a stalwart of the Society on the field of play; in the Society Executive; on the golf course; and on exchange. He was a gentleman and an example to us all of dedication to rugby and to the Society.
