Dear family of the late Eugene,
Whenever my mother drove me to school, and later on to the train station when I started work, she'll make me listen to Slice of Life. It was like her daily bread and she had every CD that was produced. After I joined the PR profession, I was surprised to meet Eugene in real life....he was not the matured uncle I had imagined but a young man!
When I told him my mother was a great fan and I asked for an autograph for mom, that was when he asked for my mom's name. To my surprise, he recognised my mom's name and shared that he replied her emails to him. I was touched that he not only took time to respond to listeners' emails, but could remember their names too.
From the many guests we sent to his shows, to when I was hosting You and the Law, to the lunches we had, Eugene was always a gentle soul. He was patient, kind, and always listened intently.
In 2017, he came up with a segment on his show for me to be a "gift guru"...to dial in regularly and give tips to listeners about new and interesting ideas/services/products that could make great gifts. In his words, "Anyway we don’t have to overthink it, just meant to be a fun, last min gift ideas that reflect the latest products and trends sort of angle.....Lemme know if the gifts thingy is sustainable or not going forward. Pls be frank. No pressure." And that is Eugene...open to feedback and suggestions, trying his best to reassure and putting his very best into every show he hosted.
Gone too soon, too sudden. We will miss his voice on radio. We will definitely miss working with him so much.
