Dr. Swindale a Great Aristocratic Leader
Dr. Swindale as he was known to all of us in the institute was a great leader for the institute and his era in terms of funding and research was the Golden Era for the ICRISAT.
He was a very discipline-loving aristocrat leader and no one referred to him even in personal discussions as Leslie. Whenever he came into the corridors and saw any scientist he would refer him and say how are you Dr……. His office area was known in the institute as the Green carpet area and it was considered by many as out of bounds area but this was not the case.
He would speak very thoughtfully in any meetings and would not like any undisciplined talk/behaviour. During his period, no scientist had to mobilize funding as most funding was core funding and Sr. Management would do all the spade work to ensure core funding. Scientists were doing their research and publishing/releasing cultivars.
He was well versed in all the aspects of management and did what was needed in the interest of the institute. His familiarity with all the functions of the institute as well as the donor community was so well recognized by the Governing Board that during the crisis in the institute in 1999 he was called back for six months to lead the institute in order to stabilize.
We always loved him and when he was called back to lead the institute from the day he arrived he was actively managing the institute and the staff.
We pray to the almighty God to rest his soul in peace-
Om Shanti.
