I worked in ICRISAT in Farming Systems from 1975 to 1986. Having learnt that Dr Swindale has passed away two days ago, I have few words to tell about him who was the DG for most of that period.
As the first longest serving Director General of ICRISAT in the early years of the institute, Dr L. Swindale provided the much needed leadership for ICRISAT to grow as the second or third big Centre among the IARCs by bringing funds. He was very kind and supportive to the cause and welfare of national staff. He was responsible to recognize the contributions of national scientists and changed the designations from Research Associates to respective professional titles as 'Agronomist', Plant breeder' etc. He had set up an appraisal and promotion system for national scientists that was appreciated by the staff. He was a reformer. He introduced sabbatic leave to national scientists for their professional growth, set up in-house reviews and regular field visits in which he used to participate and keep himself abreast of the developments. He had maintained excellent relationship with ICAR institutions and their leadership and the Indian Government, so much so that he was honoured with 'Padma Bhushan' in 1991 by the Government. Personally I have high regard for him and I pray for his soul to rest in peace with "Paramatma".
My condolences to the bereaved family.
