Dr. Rohani Hashim

March 20, 1958 - October 24, 2020

Dr. Rohani was an exceptional woman. She gained her PhD in Chemistry at King’s College in London. Until today, women are underrepresented in science. It is female leaders like Dr. Rohani, who set an example and pave the way for many women to follow. Dr. Rohani served WAITRO as the Secretary General from 2007 until 2018 shaping and impacting the Association in a way that only few did. She would challenge the Association to help it grow and always go one step further. She did not only strive to lead WAITRO forward, she saw a holistic picture and added a special focus on matters truly dear to her heart: poverty alleviation and women empowerment. Dr. Rohani lived the Global Innovation Family. She made everyone feel at home and immediately part of this colorful family that she helped to build. She would lend an open ear and open heart to everyone who needed it. Rohani, we want to thank you for your service to WAITRO. But more so, we want to thank you for everything you did for every single individual within the Global Innovation Family. We are grateful for having had the chance to work alongside you and learn from you. They say that life goes on, and it does. But two things will surely last. The marks you left in our hearts and your legacy as former Secretary General of WAITRO. You will be greatly missed. ʾinnā li-llāhi wa-ʾinna ʾilayhi rājiʿūn

I will never forget the kind, generous, and extremely gentle soul of Dr Rohani, my ‘Malaysian Mother’. Having worked with her at UNESCO, and then collaborated on a global survey of the living conditions of rural women, we became firm friends and shared so many laughs over the past 6 years. Will also be so grateful to Rohani for her kindness towards me, and it was an honour to visit in Malaysia as a speaker for the last WAITRO event she was overseeing. Having stayed in touch, I was devastated today to learn that she had passed. May her soul be at peace. Nick Newland, London

The late, great Aretha Franklin spoke for millions when she wrote ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T, find out what it means to me’ and the song has never lost its power. A good BOSS will respect you as a person and put themselves in your shoes. They know what you’re good at, the areas where you need extra support, the quirks of your personality, how you interact with others. They take an interest in you and your life. They will do everything they can do to help you thrive at work whether that’s flexible working, training, being available, saying ‘well done’ or regular 1-1 sessions. And equally, they ask for respect in return. Respect for their authority, and understanding when deadlines need to be met, the difficult decisions they have to make. They don’t need to wave the rule book, send out passive-aggressive bullet point emails, or check on your every move. They’ve earnt respect and people work hard for people they like and respect. She was my Boss for 16 years until she retires from SIRIM Berhad. Words cannot express my sadness. Only good memories stay with me until the rest of my life. Al-Fatihah.

Six years of my life were shaped by the interaction with an outstanding women as Dr. Rohani Hashim. It was not just because their intelligence, professional experience and work ethic but because she was a very good person, she taught me a lot about empathy!!! She taught me that empathy is being concerned about the human being, not just their output.

I am honoured to know Dr. Rohani Hashim in 2015. It was the WAITRO introductory program to introduce what is all about WAITRO and its role to promote science and technology. One thing that really make me noticed her was her sincerity and passion towards helping people in need regardless of country, religion and colour. Throughout 5 years of knowing her, she gave me a lot of opportunities to be active in WAITRO through participation in many conferences organised by WAITRO. I am very lucky because I attended one of the leadership program organised by LIPI in Bandung, Indonesia. The one week program had strengthen my friendship with her and other WAITRO colleagues. I can see her vision and mission to encourage UMT to collaborate with international members of WAITRO. We managed to have several discussions with TISTR and LIPI and hopefully, one day we will have MoU with them. It was a great loss for WAITRO and my country, because she had leaved us. Al-Fatihah. May Allah rewards her with Jannah. I hope I will continue to follow her steps in promoting science and technology.
