Jon Nicholls was in the year below me at Culford School, Bury St Edmunds. I remember him well for his chirpy disposition, but never knew what he did after leaving. Therefore I am pleasantly surprised at an illustrious career I could never have imagined for him, and unpleasantly surprised at his early death. Perhaps my daughter, Dr Rachel Knighton, will continue to follow in his footsteps?

I am greatly saddened to hear that Jonathan has passed away. I remember Jonathan became the new Registrary at Cambridge in the same year that I started my career in the University. When I attended the induction event, he was also there and he took time to introduce himself, sit down and talk to me for a while. Our paths crossed in several ways over the years that he was Registrary and he always came across as insightful, clear minded and open, and very keen to hear the views and ideas of his staff of all levels. I also remember his interest in staff beyond the confines of work. I took my toddler twin daughters to the University Christmas carol service at St Mary's, and Jonathan - eagle eyed as always - noticed and made a point of speaking to them. I was struck that he was sensitive to how the children might feel amongst the large crowd of adults at the service, and he was kind enough to crouch down to their level so he could say hello and chat to them face to face and at their level. I remember him with warmth and my thoughts are for his family and close friends.

Very sad news. Jonathan was always so approachable and often helped to highlight the work of the Sustainability Team, in his role as Registrary. Such a tragic loss of life. My thoughts are with his friends and family.
