My last exchange with David last month was an example of his generous nature, so willing to share his expertise that he was even unaware of the extent of his influence. He reviewed a late draft of Birth to 5 Matters, and commented that he was struck by how much the Characteristics of Effective Learning mirrored his work on CHILD. I had to remind him that the Characteristics, which are so important in the English early years framework to highlight what is central to working with young children, came into being from the Tickell review of the EYFS, and that I wrote the rationale in the Tickell review after consulting with David. Then when the detail was developed in Development Matters (2012), I met with David over a cup of coffee after a TACTYC meeting, and he helped me to write the descriptors -- so he shouldn't have been surprised that he recognised the content. I will miss not only his scholarship and guidance, but also his kindness and humour. My deepest condolences to his family.
