David was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In his professional life, David was an influential former Lecturer & Researcher in developmental psychology & early childhood education at the University of Cambridge. He founded the research centre for Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) at the Faculty of Education. Before joining Homerton College in 1986, he taught in Primary schools, mainly in Leicestershire, for 12 years. David was a kind-hearted supervisor of PhD and Master students, for which he was recognised by the University of Cambridge's Student-Led Teaching Award in 2015.

Although I have long known of David and his work I only recently had the pleasure of working with him. He was generous with both his time and knowledge but I will remember him most because of his passion. When listening to him you couldn't.t help but feel his enthusiasm and commitment in what he believed in. A role model for us all!
