David is my beloved supervisor and academic father, in terms of Chinese culture. We met in 2001 when I had the most difficult time of study in Cambridge. He guided me going through the darkness and lightened my life along the way to graduation. David’s spirit towards academics and people deeply influences me. After that, we together with our families become life-long friends. David is always positive to people around him. The only time that I remember that he was so sad was that he rang me over the phone at my flat in Churchill College because I failed my Ph.D. thesis proposal oral defense. He was sad (I could feel from his voice) even much sadder than me. That is David, so kind to people around him. Sometimes, I think that he may almost forget himself but only focus on being kind to people around him. David, Linda, and my family (Robert and Jenny) had good memories traveling in Taiwan in 2004 when I successfully got my Ph.D. and became a faculty member in my University in Taiwan. I’d love to attribute the good luck (getting my Ph.D. and finding a good job) to David’s excellent supervision, support, and guidance. We keep our relationships, such as staying in David and Linda’s house when I and my family visited Cambridge, enjoying Linda’s delicious cooking, having meals together in lovely local restaurants several times in Cambridge, and doing research together. I feel very much grief after I knew David passed away. I believe that David is an angel and now in heaven for all the kindness he had done for the people in the world. We just emailed each other on 5th-6th March 2021, arranging our likely gathering with Linda together in Cambridge if the pandemic went to an end. I’ll definitely visit David and Linda as planned if I can go to the UK this summer or later. David, you are still with me!!! You are in my mind forever in my lifetime.

Deepest sympathies in the loss of David. He was a warm, generous man whose words have shaped my teaching.
