I have known Dave since the early sixties when we attended Cheadle Etchells Primary School. We went to the same big school… Moseley Hall. It was after all that school stuff was over that I really got close to Dave. We went to the Conway pub and were part of a gang that always frequented the same seated area …..for about 8 years. Ronnie Parks the big fat landlord of the Conway, once barred Dave (probably for some ultra clever piss taking). There was a fancy dress night during Dave's barred period and Dave came back as the invisible man. All bedecked in bandages. Ronnie hadn't a clue who it was until some snitch told him. Ronnie had been laughing at Dave's attire with great approval and serving the bandaged bandit beer before the snitch came in. Anyway, Dave was bundled out of the door with his bandages flapping in the breeze. Another year, another landlord, another fancy dress.....Dave Hardy comes in the pub dressed as a baby..His slinky long legs on show below a nappy. His top was a bib. Dave stood there cool as fuck with a pint in his hand. Well if you've got it why not flaunt it?
We formed a band in the punk era calling ourselves “The Inadequates” . Practised in Manchester next door to Joy Division. We did a gig in Macclesfield once with Ian Curtis in attendance. Dave squirted shaving foam on his head at the gig and it dribbled into his eye temporarily blinding him. I slipped over in the foam which was now all over the stage. Dave tried to lift me up with his foot to no avail. I finished the song on my knees...which was not how we should have finished it.
I have known him nearly all my life but lifestyle changes in later years left us less close and somewhat distanced. We always got in touch with each other though. I have many stories of times with Dave, some of which I dare not say in case I get locked up. It was a privilege and a pleasure to have known you Dave. My world is poorer because you have gone. I am very proud to have been your friend.
