I am very sorry to hear about Barry's death. We were colleagues at Southampton and we had many great discussions about the various pieces of research we were doing. He was a very considerate and helpful colleague. An example of his creative thinking was his idea of setting up the Economic Review to communicate what economics could say about current events in a way A level students could understand was truly innovative. I was happy to be involved in the early years. It is still going strong and has been taken up by other disciplines. When he was at the Department of Health I was pleased to do some work for him relating to the ban on smoking in public places, and his work on that has had a huge benefit for public health.
He and Doreen were great friends, and we always enjoyed our meeting with them.
He is sorely missed.
