Alioune Badiane

September 27, 1954 - July 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the demise of Dr. Alioune Badiane on 31 July 2020 in Dakar, Senegal after a short illness. Alioune retired in 2016 after serving for over 25 years in UN-Habitat. While at UN-Habitat, Alioune served as Chief Technical Adviser, Regional Coordinator for the Urban Management Programme and Director for the Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director for the Programme Division. His sudden death has come as a shock to UN-Habitat and also to many in the international development community who knew and worked with him. His service, dedication and leadership not only strengthened this UN-Habitat’s programme of work, but also left an indelible impact in the lives of people within and beyond UN-Habitat. We all remember how gallantly he always fought for UN-Habitat during the sessions of the Executive Board, especially during the 29 June 2020. UN-Habitat has lost a true friend. May Alioune’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Alioune, the uncle l never had. The gentle giant, a kind heart, humble, jovial, very strong, resilient, always giving of himself even sometimes at his own detriment, his office was like a refugee camp, colleagues with issues found their way there and indeed found refuge and protection. The best boss that I have ever had in my whole career. His trust in me, his support, and protection made me to dared to do more, dared to be my best. He cared not only for my professional life but also for my personal life; he was great support when l had my twins. I am still in shock, it does not feel real, it is unbelievable, l know that l will never forget Alioune. Without undermining anyone else, there cannot be another Alioune. I will miss you, gentle giant. Sleep well in the bosom of your maker, dearest Boss, and Uncle. May the Lord comfort and give strength to your family and to us your friends and people.
