Alioune Badiane

September 27, 1954 - July 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the demise of Dr. Alioune Badiane on 31 July 2020 in Dakar, Senegal after a short illness. Alioune retired in 2016 after serving for over 25 years in UN-Habitat. While at UN-Habitat, Alioune served as Chief Technical Adviser, Regional Coordinator for the Urban Management Programme and Director for the Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director for the Programme Division. His sudden death has come as a shock to UN-Habitat and also to many in the international development community who knew and worked with him. His service, dedication and leadership not only strengthened this UN-Habitat’s programme of work, but also left an indelible impact in the lives of people within and beyond UN-Habitat. We all remember how gallantly he always fought for UN-Habitat during the sessions of the Executive Board, especially during the 29 June 2020. UN-Habitat has lost a true friend. May Alioune’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Alioune, you will stay in our heart for so many reasons... – for your generosity, your professionalism, wisdom and knowledge, your values, your dedication to urbanization, to justice and equity and finally the drive to making this world a better place. You shared so generously your time, culture, heart, passion, and values with everyone who wanted to participate. You stood up for values, the disadvantaged, colleagues, governments, UN-Habitat, the UN system, humanity and all that needed to be stood up for. You could connect, move and inspire people no matter who or on what occasion. You opened yourself up to anyone, listened in and responded from your heart. Your smile, advise, empowerment and continued energy of believing every challenge is just the way to something bigger, your vision and support to people around you – made a difference every day! Thank you! Thank you for the empowerment, knowledge, networks, learning and opening of doors to continue – by leaving so many people with little pieces of your legacy and your heart advise! Thank you to your family for the shared generosity, humbleness and the great heart. My sincere condolences to all!
