When I served as Director of City planning Nairobi between 2001-2002 I had my first encounter with Alioune. We did a night walk together as part of the Nairobi Safer Cities initiative. He was a forthright straight speaking professional who was focused on achieving transformation in the urban sector. Later on, I rember him fondly refering to me as ' Veteran Planner' . I never got to ask him why this title. I was shocked to learn of his demise not so long after that of my dear friend Mariam Lady Yunusa. RIP.
