Alioune Badiane

September 27, 1954 - July 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the demise of Dr. Alioune Badiane on 31 July 2020 in Dakar, Senegal after a short illness. Alioune retired in 2016 after serving for over 25 years in UN-Habitat. While at UN-Habitat, Alioune served as Chief Technical Adviser, Regional Coordinator for the Urban Management Programme and Director for the Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director for the Programme Division. His sudden death has come as a shock to UN-Habitat and also to many in the international development community who knew and worked with him. His service, dedication and leadership not only strengthened this UN-Habitat’s programme of work, but also left an indelible impact in the lives of people within and beyond UN-Habitat. We all remember how gallantly he always fought for UN-Habitat during the sessions of the Executive Board, especially during the 29 June 2020. UN-Habitat has lost a true friend. May Alioune’s soul rest in eternal peace.

I worked with Alioune Badiane and Mariam Ladi Yunusa in the NEPAD Cities Program and it pains me so much that once again we are mourning another fallen hello and a similarly kind person just one year later. AB was always jovial and I used to tease him whenever I ran into him that he should mind his head since he almost always touched the roof with his head. It is hard to believe that tower of humility is no more. Fare thee well and Rest In Peace AB. May you family be strengthened to bear the loss
