I first engaged with Alioune when he was in charge of the UN-Habitat Urban Management Programme in West Africa, based in Abidjan. I worked in the Gender Unit and he said he wanted ideas on how to put "a serious, visible and practical" gender perspective in the programme." I was struck by his commitment to gender and social inclusion, his global outlook and his special love for Africa. Over the next twenty years I grew to appreciate his honesty, fighting spirit, generosity with advice and acknowledgement of others' contribution as well as his appreciation of the value of sound partnerships for sustainable urbanisation.
I will greatly miss his advice, sense of humour and friendship. What a loss to humanity, Africa, Senegal and UN-Habitat. To his family, sincere condolences. Know that many mourn with you.
