Alioune Badiane

September 27, 1954 - July 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the demise of Dr. Alioune Badiane on 31 July 2020 in Dakar, Senegal after a short illness. Alioune retired in 2016 after serving for over 25 years in UN-Habitat. While at UN-Habitat, Alioune served as Chief Technical Adviser, Regional Coordinator for the Urban Management Programme and Director for the Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Director for the Programme Division. His sudden death has come as a shock to UN-Habitat and also to many in the international development community who knew and worked with him. His service, dedication and leadership not only strengthened this UN-Habitat’s programme of work, but also left an indelible impact in the lives of people within and beyond UN-Habitat. We all remember how gallantly he always fought for UN-Habitat during the sessions of the Executive Board, especially during the 29 June 2020. UN-Habitat has lost a true friend. May Alioune’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Dr Badiane was passionate about Africa's development and the inherent capacity of Africa to achieve sustainable urbanization on our own terms. I met him through Mrs Mariam Yunusa (of blessed memory) sometime in 2011. He has since then inspired and challenged me. An amiable man with an imposing personality. He spoke truth to power and encouraged us to be intrepid in the defence of our values. He will be sorely missed. The great ones are leaving really big shoes to fill. We will continue with the work that you and Mummy Mariam have left for us - Africa must achieve her full potential! Dr Taibat Lawanson University of Lagos, Nigeria
