What a shocking news. I met Alioune before joining UN-Habitat without ever thinking that one day we would work closely and share a collegial and friendship relationship for a full decade as UN-Habitat staff. An unforgettable voice and a laugh that filled the ambience with energy. His dedication, leadership and passion for the global causes in urban development when dealing with governments, partners and citizens of the many places and cities we worked together was noticeable and impactful. His stand for Africa was fierce. His personality did shine the joy for life. He had a presence by stature, voice and opinions that simply could not go unnoticeable. He would not avoid any dispute that could compromise the mission of UN-Habitat and the respect for his staff and the programmes he led. We moved the housing and slum upgrading agendas together in several African countries making him a genuine leader of that continent. He will be missed. But he leaves a legacy. His family and friends will mourn but will carry on his fire for life and the will for a better future in cities of the world and in his African home. Rest in piece companheiro. Claudio Acioly
