I first met Alan when I started work for the Student Loans Company in the Loans Admin department in 1994. We had a similar sense of humour and formed a bond of friendship very quickly. I used to call him Frenchie on account of his email address which used to incorporate the department he worked for within it, Alan LA Graham. It was there he met the love of his life Lesley. They were both like two peas in a pod, finishing each other’s sentences. Then, nearly 10 years down the line later they tied the knot in 2003…. Alan was always a procrastinator. I have so many great memories of Alan during the years we worked together and outside of work life too. We had such a reputation together that when we both started working in the IT department, the manager of the Service Desk was advised to “watch that pair, as they are trouble”, I kid you not. Coincidently that same person seemed to report a recurring issue with their password that would consistently lock every morning. Alan was a charitable man. He gave up the price of his dignity by consenting to providing a posed picture of himself wearing nothing but a pair of tight speedo’s for a company calendar to be sold later for charity, but unfortunately I can’t remember which charity now as the memory of the speedo’s blocked anything after that for the whole year. Years later when Alan developed some health issues further down the line he was never one to complain about them. He always pushed forward and came back stronger, sharing his appreciation of his wife’s support and his aversion for hospitals. I am glad that he lived a full and happy life where he could with his wife, family and friends. Alan was always quite the gentleman, kind, generous and was always thoughtful of others. He was taken from us all far too soon. I shall miss you dearly old friend. Until we meet again Frenchie, your pal Al.
