Anne Marden, wife of the late John Marden, mother of Jennie, Doro, Anto and Debs, devoted grandmother to 11 and great grandmother to 14, died on 31 May 2022 aged 96, at her home in Shek-O. During the last years of her life she suffered from Parkinson’s disease, which she bore bravely. Born in Shanghai, she lived all her adult life in Hong Kong where she was a champion for the rights of underprivileged, especially children, strove to improve life and opportunities for Hong Kong’s physically handicapped, and used her personal standing to encourage acceptance of marginalised people, from refugees to women sex workers. She received many honours for her pioneering contributions to modern social services in Hong Kong.

Memories of Anne Marden weave in and out of thhe memories of my lifetime. My first memory of Mrs. Marden was as the calm hostess presiding over a chaotic 8th (?) birthday costume party for Doro and Jennie at the Barker Road house. Over the years our lives crossed in Hong Kong and Washington and Switzerland. She was always welcoming and gracious and an engaged and curious listener. I have fond memories of visits to Shek-O and failed efforts to teach me to water ski! And a visit to us in Washington D.C. where all four younger Mardens came down with measles! John and Anne went on to their convention in Dallas leaving the children with us in Washington! In more recent years I have very much enjoyed exchanging news with her each Christmas, particularly her updates about her far-flung multi-generational family - she was so proud of all of you! Until I read her obituary, I had not fully realized all the organizations and charities to which she had contributed. She was a great lady who lived a rich and full life! with best wishes and happy memories from the entire Aylward family. Anne

Words cannot fully express our greatest gratitude and deepest sorrow over the passing of Mrs Anne Marden, an elegant and noble lady who had shined on the ways of thousands of people. Mrs Marden had been committed to supporting education in Hong Kong and creating opportunities for children with disabilities and from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Caritas - Hong Kong was blessed to have received fundings from the Marden Foundation during the 1970s. We are most grateful to have cooperated with Mrs Marden in establishing three pre-vocational schools, providing education and assistance to students with different nationalities, abilities and talents. With a heart of gold, Mrs Marden devoted her life to serve and care for others. Her benevolence and dedication to the community had positively impacted the sustainable development of social welfare organizations and enlightened the life of many youngsters. Her legacy will live on through the many lives she had touched. Her gracious manner and beautiful smile will forever be remembered. We, Caritas - Hong Kong, pay our highest tribute to Mrs Marden and offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.

Anne has been likened to an angel many times since she passed. Her generous, kind and caring nature has been portrayed by a great many others. I did not know her well but having read of her extraordinary contribution to the pe, ople of Hongkong be they young or old, sick, sad or lonely one recognises she was a person of very special qualities. A missing accolade was her generosity to The Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care and her faithful attendance at their Annual Christmas Carol Concert. I wish to thank Anne on behalf of the Society for all she did to help us and assure her that though she may not be with us in person this next December she will be in spirit. Her name will be tied with a red ribbon to our Tree of Life. Lit during the service this 15 foot glittering and overloaded conveyor of heartfelt messages …… gives the congregation an opportunity to remember all the angels we have loved and lost - a meaningful tradition that will keep them alive forever.

Action for REACHOUT is deeply grateful for Anne’s care for the underprivileged, especially the marginalised groups, in the society, and her passion and contribution towards the social development of Hong Kong. Mrs. Marden had been supporting AFRO since early years. We are thankful for her generous donation and her participation, as a member and the patron of AFRO. Mrs Anne Marden was the Founder and President of TREATS. We are so blessed to have her to lead our way in the past 43 years. ‘’Wherever help is needed this worker will be there.’’ The headline of a feature story of Mrs Marden 9 years ago perfectly indicated why she was definitely one of the heroes in Hong Kong’s social services field. Trailblazing social service volunteer and philanthropist Mrs Anne Marden, championed the rights of the underprivileged, especially children, strove tirelessly to improve life and opportunities for people with physical disabilities in Hong Kong, and used her personal standing to encourage acceptance of marginalized people in the past decades. Mrs Marden believed passionately that it was a basic right of all children to have a childhood, no matter how underprivileged their background. Troubled at the sight of Vietnamese refugee children languishing in camps, she co-founded TREATS in 1979, bringing Vietnamese children out of the boat camp to participate in outdoor activities. As one of the few organizations which could enter the boat camps and bring the children out, we gave ‘treats’ to the refugee children for 19 years. Today, carrying on Mrs Marden’s vision for social inclusion, we devise various inclusive activities to enable children and teenagers of different abilities and backgrounds, especially those with special needs, to break through barriers, so as to bridge social gaps between the typical and disadvantaged children and youths. Mrs Marden always motivated and inspired people by her wisdom, love and selfless efforts to help the needy. Her work ignited, and continues to ignite us to work harder to build a more equal, diverse and inclusive society. Mrs Marden, we will always remember your passion, patience and perseverance. Anne was such a beautiful, serene and loving woman.. unselfish and dutiful .. always taking care of everyone else. I remember the days on Kunjiang when Ah Shum would pull the waterskiers all day and just before returning home Anne would say “well if no one else wants to ski, perhaps I’ll do a round..” then pop on her ski and take off from the back of the boat without getting her hair wet !! It was a formidable sight for all on board!

Playright will forever remember Mrs Anne Marden who led us to where and what we are today Mrs Marden not only cared for others and served Hong Kong's society relentlessly but turned her incomparable enthusiasm for the care of children into actionable items, including the inauguration of Playright in1987. In her gentle and benevolent ways, she educated and led Playright's vision and personally saw to the opening of the King's Park Children's Playground in 1989, a first of its kind at the time as a playground designed for children with special needs. Its long-term impact inspired the design of Tuen Mun Park Inclusive Playground over 20 years later where children can play with sand and water nowadays, thanks to Mrs Marden's ground-breaking advocacy many years ago. Mrs Marden's insightful concern about the healthy development of children initiated many other local projects and establishments - playgrounds in refugee camps and prisons; play services in hospitals; toy libraries; play ideas for parents and teachers; adventure playgrounds; nature play; and what we nowadays know as Play Street, Play Mobile and Playscope, among others. Forward looking, Mrs Marden emphasized that besides creating projects, adults need to understand the importance of play, and this saw the beginning of Playright's training programmes which eventually culminated in the opening of the Anne Marden Playright Academy in 2020 through the kind funding support of the Marden Foundation. Mrs Marden was an active participant from internal discussions to external affairs, local promotions to international conferences, play events, and even construction sites. Whether she advocated, lobbied, wrote, or gave a speech, Mrs Marden's rigorous and no-nonsense messages inspired all at Playright and beyond, and she has been a model to look up to and learn from. Mrs Anne Marden, Founder and Honorary President of Playright, passed away on May 31, 2022, at the age of 96. Her selfless, unfailing dedication will be remembered by the Hong Kong people; her kindness, her smile, and her teaching will always be in the heart of Playright; her inspiration and her vision will remain our beacon, lighting the long road to promote children's play. Thank you, Mrs Marden! We feel deeply honoured for your inspiration in the past, the presence and well into the future!
