Passed on Thursday February 8, 2018, after a valiant battle with his disease. Loving father of Matthew, husband of Martha. Dear son of Pearl and the late John Kelvin. Donwill be dearly missed by his sisters, Jennifer (Barry Wells), Patricia (David Wright), Deborah (Jurek Walczak), and his brother John. Don is survived by eleven nieces and nephews. Special thanks to his cousins John and Pat Slade, for their love and devotion over the years.

Niagara Falls became a fun family getaway just before I started high school, and my parents would always take me to see shows at 'Oh Canada Eh?!'. It became an annual thing. We celebrated my 17th birthday there (I believe the show was called 'Broadway Love'). Since then I've had the pleasure of joining the 'Oh Canada Eh' team and along the way my dad became their biggest fan. He made a point of seeing nearly every show, even the ones I wasn't in, just to be in the room with the incredible OCE family and share in their work. Just before he died, my dad made plans to take my mom out to Niagara to see the current production 'The Show Must Go On'. The whole show is music from my parents era (60s/70s). A few days ago I realized that my suit, which I need for the funeral mass this coming Friday, was in the dressing room at work (left over from New Years Eve). I took this as an opportunity to make the drive out to Niagara and take my mom to see the show. Everything came full circle last night as I found myself sitting in the audience once again, this time a few days before my 31st birthday, watching an 'Oh Canada Eh?!' production that had been dedicated to the memory of my father.

I remember Mr. Yipchuck arriving to our film sets in University and beyond, armed with any meal, prop or set piece we'd ask him for, but more importantly, with words of encouragement and a huge smile. He will be sorely missed :*(

I remember being a young child and we would go to uncle dons. I would grab onto his arm and he would just pick me up right off the ground and laugh while doing it. He was so strong and so happy. He was a giant with a heart to match. No matter what he was going through he never complained. He was never too tired to pick me up from the airport at 2am. Never to busy to play 1 more hand of bridge. He knew a little something about everything because he used to listen. Even if it didn’t interest him he would listen and remember. He never judged anyone just supported and loved. Thank you uncle don for always being there. For all those who read and look at pictures on this page. Do not cry, do not shed a tear as uncle would never have wanted it. He would tell a joke make you smile and give you hug.

I have many wonderful memories of Donald Yipchuck that almost always perfectly demonstrate his incredibly supportive and thoughtful character. Whether lending me his van to move into university, or making sure I got a hat to wear at the Ex so my head didn't burn, or seeing him in the audience of every single show Matt did, he was always thinking of others and offering help and support in any way he could. I always enjoyed talking with him and was always touched by his kindness and genuine interest in what I was up to. One of my favourite memories, though, I would have say, was when he told me, my sister, and my mom the story of how the name Yipchuck came to be. At the time, we were waiting to shoot scenes for a princess movie his son Matt was filming. Donald took this opportunity to tell us how the Yipchucks all began. Donald's father, I believe, was named Charles Yip, often referred to by friends and Chuck. And upon arriving at a new place and being asked his name, he began with his last name, followed by his first name, as he was often accustomed to doing. The result of course was "Yip, Chuck". And from that moment onward, he was forever more referred to as "Yipchuck". I absolutley love this name and there is certainly no other one like it! I particularly enjoying calling Matt by his last name and various other variations of it, including but not limited to Yip, Yipperoo, Yippington, Yipperton, Yippy..etc...I loved that story and I often tell it to other people. It was a special moment when the Yipchuck history was shared and we got some quality time with Donald. A wonderful man and a wonderful memory I will never forget!

The memory I will always cherish, is of Uncle Don standing up at Steven and Teresa's wedding, delivering a very touching speech welcoming Teresa and Caitlin to the Yipchuck family. This spoke to so many of Uncle Don's amazing traits... His unconditional love and loyalty for family, his generous spirit, his magnetic presence. He would do anything for family and it was for that reason that so many people were drawn to him. He was the guest of honour just about anywhere he went. Miss you uncle, and thinking of you in this difficult time Matt.

Theatre is a huge part of my life. Anyone who knows me has seen my pretentious side (I have an acting degree), and one of my favorite hobbies is getting into debates about why and how 'Into the Woods' in the greatest piece of theatrical writing from the 20th century. I will fight anyone on that. My father was not a theatre person. His thing was always sports. Specifically tennis and golf. I tried sports for about 5 minutes when I was a kid before I retreated back to my Disney movies and "learn to draw" books. When I was 11 or 12 and the internet was new (I love being able to say that...) I discovered there was a musical where all the fairytales got mixed together. I got my mom to order the VHS from Rogers video and much to her and my dads dismay 'Into the Woods' became my required summer viewing when we would go up to the Collingwood cottage. I'm not sure how many times my dad reluctantly sat in the same room as me while I watched that VHS tape, waiting for it to end so he could put on Rudy or Field of Dreams or some other movie with sports and stuff. Fast forward about 5 years: My grade 12 musical was 'Into the Woods'. I auditioned, obviously, and when my dad asked me what part I got I said "the mysterious man, he's the-" and then my dad finished the sentence and said "oh yeah, he's the one that turns out to be the father at the end". Hm. Fast forward another few years. I'm in my second year at York University and a nearby theatre troupe is producing 'Into the Woods'. I tell my dad I'm thinking about auditioning and he says he'll drive me from my residence on campus to the audition. He does, and after the audition he takes me out for dinner. We're sitting and he says he thinks I'll be cast as the baker, and I say that if that happens it would be great but that I wasn't sure if I could make the commute from campus to rehearsal 3 times a week and that I didn't have the $150 registration fee to work with the company and he said not to worry about that, that if I got my dream role he would help make it possible. Then he went on talk about the other actors he saw at the audition, speculating stuff like "I think this person will be little red, that other girl will be the witch etc...". I was pleasantly surprised. Apparently, he was paying attention to that VHS copy of 'Into the Woods' those ten years prior. I was cast as the baker. He spent 3 months driving from Hamilton just to take me from campus to rehearsal. After each rehearsal he would show up with some kind of food or snack from the amazing bakery that was next to the rehearsal space....usually it was pizza. It was amazing pizza. I had a rehearsal on my birthday, and when he picked me up he had a chocolate cake because he knew I had planned a game night with my friends in residence and wanted me to have something to share/celebrate with. For me, those few months doing that show were the perfect encapsulation of his dedication and love for me and the things he knew I cared about. Even if he didn't naturally gravitate to theatre, he took the time to learn and took every action he could to help support me in doing what I love. 'Into the Woods' is a beautiful show. I've had the honor of playing both the baker and his father, the mysterious man...and living through that relationship in my real life. Rest in peace father.
