Charles and I first met 34 years ago as newly qualified nurse teachers at the Victoria Infirmary School of Nursing, Glasgow and from first meeting became good friends. His love of nursing, doing the best for his students and injecting some fun into his lessons and work made him a valued colleague, while his love of his family, gardening and thirst for wider general knowledge and innovations ensured we always had lively conversations and plenty to debate. Lots of lovely memories of graduation balls, lunches at McDonalds and sharing an office together at the South College of Nursing and then GCU. Watching with pride as Charles’ career in clinical simulation developed, remembering where it all first started in a four bedded ‘practical room’ at the Victoria Infirmary. You achieved so much Charles and touched so many lives you will not be forgotten. Our plans for walking parts of the West Highland Way and climbing some Munro’s will still go ahead. Know that you will be missed as Raymond and I walk without you physically in our company, we will remember you fondly and with many happy memories as we admire the beautiful Scottish countryside. Rest in peace Charles x

I always wanted to speak with Charles since I left AKU but couldn't really do so except few chats on WhatsApp. I regret this now. I always had a lot of fun working with Charles, His sense of humor is something I will miss the most. We both used to tease each other and at times imitate each others accents. Also I remember him telling everyone about attending my traditional wedding. He loved the music band which performed Scottish tune on his request. Having said all of this, Dr Charles was a person - people would wish to have around them. Always very supportive, helping, encouraging and most importantly positive. May his soul rest in peace.

There is so much I could say about Charles, but it's been over a week since his passing, and the pain is still raw. It's hard to believe he is no longer with us. He wasn't just my boss; he was a great leader, mentor, and trusted friend who supported me through the ups and downs of my professional life, always offering guidance and advice when I needed it most. He was a visionary leader who deeply cared about the people he worked with, always going above and beyond to support them. We traveled together to many places, and I still remember our visit to Glasgow, his hometown. He proudly showed me around the places where he spent time with friends and family, including the college and university where he had studied and begun his teaching career. We shared many good memories. His loss is deeply felt not only by me but by all those who worked with him at AKU. Rest in peace, Charles. Your legacy will always live on. You will be missed deeply but never forgotten.

A very lovely man who looked after me in Bahrain when I was examining there and who also invited my to AKU and to the UAE - sadly unable to fulfil either visit so it is many years since we met. He made a significant contribution to nursing and medicine in the Middle East and South Asia. Had always hoped to catch up in our native land when we were both retired. Sadly that won’t happen.

I have known him for more than 12 years. He has always been there for people, an articulate, persuasive, confident leader who saw the good in everyone. I had attached this pic as when he told me that he was diagnosed. I was very upset, and then he sent this pic Saying, “Tough life in Spain”, which made me smile. He loved his family and was looking forward to being at his daughter’s wedding. If you are reading this JD, I am sure you know this already. He will be there with you in spirit. He will undoubtedly be missed. His light shines bright in our hearts. Rest in Peace, Charles.

Prof. Charles helped me improve career wise and also largely as a person. He had a good vision at work and gave us a sense of direction as a simulation center. He had good sense of humour and was fun to be with too. Rest in eternal peace.

You persuaded me to tap my innermost strengths, believe in myself and stand out as a leader in the region in helping healthcare education professionals tap into new technologies that would facilitate healthcare training in the broader world of healthcare simulation. I admired your leadership standards and practically getting things that need to be done "done". I will personally miss you, and I will translate all I learnt from you into broadening the vision and mission of AKU-CIME regionally and beyond. May your soul rest in peace Prof. Charles.

I still can’t believe that Charles is no more. When I first met Charles I did not know that we are going to be too close to each other with all the ups and downs in our life. Being with Charles I had a wonderful time and we had really good memories together. Charles was always humble, smiley and helpful man I have ever met. Charles is with us but we can not see him, he is in our hearts, all of his great memories and the time we spend together. I wish we can be together again, we will meet soon Charles. You will be missed. My sincere condolences to Joanna Docherty and Charles family.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our Global Director, Professor Charles Docherty. We will all miss Professor Docherty more than words can express. He was not just our colleague, but our good friend, and an indefatigable champion of medical simulation education. Professor Docherty joined AKU in 2016 as the Inaugural Director of CIME. Since the Centre’s launch in 2017, Professor Docherty has led CIME in the promotion of pedagogical diversity by embedding simulation-based education into curricula and improving the quality of healthcare in the regions where we operate. Under Professor Docherty’s tutelage, CIME became the first such centre in South Asia to be accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace.
