It has been many years since a young, somewhat shy and smiling Chu joined my lab for a few weeks to learn methods of analysis of algae. He became a cherished friend and it was always great to catch up with him. Chu was always very generous with his time and very willing to help others. His work on algae has made an important contribution to applied phycology and we miss him.
My first experience in conference poster presentation was given by Prof. Chu. That experience was an eye opener for me. As my co-supervisor, Prof. Chu sincerely gave me his feedback, advice & guidance. Thank you very much Prof. Chu. Farewell.
Chu, you will be missed among the Algae Research Laboratory, UM members. You are the Big Brother in the Algae Research Laboratory, UM and shown great example being so successful in your career. This family photo taken during APPF2017 and also the celebration of retirement of Prof. Phang shall always be in our memory.
Chu will be remembered as an extremely creative and thoughtful scientist, able to seamlessly blend the biological questions he so passionately pursued with his broad background in biological principles and quantitative analysis. His contributions to the fields of microalgae and polar research are unquestioned, and are reflected in his outstanding international reputation and many awards and honors. But to us, his colleagues, Chu was much more than an outstanding scientist. He will be remembered as a warm and caring friend, and as a dedicated mentor who always gave credit to his “troops”. He will be remembered for his love of Korean drama, travel, good food and coffee, all best shared with the company of others. And for his gentle but sometimes very blunt humor. He will be remembered as a wonderful colleague who gave freely of his time, advice and expertise. And he will be remembered for serving the School and IMU with great distinction in many capacities, including his long tenure as the Dean of Postgraduate School.

31 July 2016 - IMU algae group of the MUST do annual activity
A great and passionate teacher, supervisor, mentor, researcher, leader and colleague that I have ever met. The memory of you will always be in our hearts.
There are so many memories. In 2015, he was appointed officially as my faculty mentor he had to sign my form. He asked me what I would be in 5 years time? When I giggled, he drove me off the room saying he wasn't mentoring people without ambition. Emails he would reply within nanoseconds. If it was grant submission time, he would be there for us 24X7 on WhatsApp. If he was there in any of my JC defence, he would show his approval by clearing his throat. And there were those times where he would call me with an urgent wave of the hand around the corridors and just ask how everything was going. He was the first person to wish me a happy new year 2020! The last conversation within IMU was in the bench outside the deanery. He was tired! But as usual, we discussed proposals we wanted to work on after he got better! You will be dearly missed Prof Chu!
A kind, sincere leader and a supportive mentor who had been instrumental in my career. You will be missed, Prof Chu!
