Mahabala Hegde VU2HEG

March 19, 1938 - July 2, 2021

VU2HEG, or dear Hegde-mam to most, was an ever enthusiastic ham well known to anyone in the entire country, and beyond, to who's been around a bit on the hobby. A mentor and an Elmer to a huge group of fellow hams, he was the founding president of Mangalore Amateur Radio Club, VU2RDO. A ham for well over 4 decades, he promoted the hobby in many ways including bringing up two well known radio clubs in the region, Mangalore Amateur Radio Club VU2RDO and also the KREC Ham Radio Club, VU2REC at the prestigious NITK/KREC Engineering institute. He retired from his professional career as a Senior Manager at Vijaya Bank after serving in various capacities in other organizations too, like the KREC and a brief stint in the Indian Airforce. A visit to his shack and a careful look around would reveal a plethora of unique gadgets and novel arrangements displaying his uncanny ability of homebrewing in the true spirit of that term in hamming. Very well known for his friendly and loving nature, he had an amazing sense of humour and the unbelievable ability to quip that witty remark, or recite that most appropriate proverb, or come up with an apt anecdote in nano seconds! A stickler for discipline, frank nature and his no nonsense and most practical approach to life around him earned him great respect and reverence among every one of his acquaintance. Along with a legacy in hamming, he leaves behind a very caring family, including his elder harmonic VU2ABU OM Abhay, and a huge fan following of fellow hams. 73 dear Hegdemam, your physical presence will be missed dearly but you can never leave us.. - Team MARC

My connection to VU2HEG goes back, way back, even before I knew what HAM Radio was. When I was a young kid, around 3-5, I used to be terrified of hair-cuts, and on more than one occasion, it just so happened that HEG was also there at the same time, and he would assist my dad in holding me down ! because I would throw a fit and be restless ! This is how far back my memories go ! Later on, when I was class 6-7-8 ish, I saw him demonstrating at an outdoor event on the KREC campus in front of the main building. I clearly remember like it was yesterday - the old HRO receiver and a tube based TX, I think it was an EL84 to 2 807s on the final. I was not only intrigued, I was hooked. The QSO he introduced me as an SWL was with 2TTC, we all know. It all started there, wish we had smart phones and cameras, because all I have are fond memories, which is treasured. May be it is better this way. Like many others have shared, he was my first HAM friend, he gave me my first CPO, my first morse key and supported my very silly & crazy ideas of building a key with a hacksaw blade and toothpaste cap :) Later on, he helped me with my first QRP I built, showed me what and how a BFO works and on and on it goes.... As a young school kid, I used to have to take commercial bus to and fro to school in Panambur from KREC, and HEG's residence at that time was in Hosabettu, and no matter rain or shine, I always took a glance towards that QTH, looking at the mast that held a inverted V dipole, later on a smaller Quad, and many other contraptions. The best memory I have is that of an antenna rotator he built using an old cycle rim coupled with nylon rope coming in to a wheel cranked by hand next to his rig. This man was a genius ! HEG will always be remembered, cherished and forever etched in my heart, not only for his influence in this hobby, but a dear friend of the family. Having looked up to him all these years, I continue to do so, except now I have to look higher! HEG - You have been a blessing! de VU2ATO/KB1DWN
